Hello guys So I have a question is the Jolla Phone one year later still worth the money, because I need a new phone but I don't know how the hardware is at the moment. Especially the screen resolution, which is quite low, how is it in real use? And the other thing is how is the speed because it don't have the fastest chip? Or should I wait till next year and the release of Jolla 2? Currently using a mid-range Android phone.

Best Regards from Germany

The next Jolla will be released not later than next year. The tablet will be released in May 2015 so maybe the next phone Comes after that date. I think then they will crowdsource again. Used Jollas do cost a lot on ebay so you will get quiet a good Money for it.

Iam waiting for another voucher sale till Xmas, if there´s no iam done with Jolla; the idea is nice but their Prices are pretty unrealistic...at the bottom line: you´re buying the idea of open source and freedom (like in free Software).

If you can get one cheap know, take it. I wont wait until next year.

i think only with a 100€ discont you should buy it because there was the opportunity to. in my eyes the jolla phone is the best u can get. the specs sound terrible but the phone is fluent. besides, it seems that 'power users' have many problems while people with usual usage are totally happy. i read that somewhere. some people say that even android apps run better on the jolla. i personally dont use android apps except maps for offline navigation. everything depends on what u want to do.

The specs are a big problem for all people which read it. IMHO the specs for the Jolla are totaly fine. The screen resolution is not the best but for me it is totaly enough. Some little writings on homepages are not clean but when this is the case, the text is so small that you can't even read it with a higher resolution.

Also the speed from the cpu and the size of the ram doesn't matter. Android/iOS and other big player slain there performance problems with besser CPUs and more RAM. If you come from the linux world, you know that a system can absolutely run fine with low resources when it is coded well. Even my notebook needs less than 2GB when firefox, thunderbird and flash are running (and all thre are not known to be well/resource spare programmed). The same aplies to my Jolla. With 9 apps ideling in the background the device runs smooth and well.

But all in all you must know, what you set into. Jolla is still a "little" company compared to google,apple,etc... But if you like to have a full and mature linux on your device and you want a great community which does incredible things (see the TOHKBD or Jolla Tablet campain) become a sailor. You won't regret it :)

Also best regards from Germany, Sqozz

The screen resolution has never bothered me, speed is decent with the latest (beta) update there are some more slowdowns due to low RAM situations but they are expected to be solved in the next update.

Personally I ordered a second device (after breaking the Gorilla Glass on my current device), whether or not that is right for you I can't tell you.

I think you missed the recent discount voucher of 100E which definitely made it more worthwhile, but maybe they extended them again... Also the release of the tablet may result in the phone price also being lowered.

I think in the end the question for you is how urgently do you want to replace your phone...

Tough one. Hardware is not really the problem here: It's reasonably fast, and the low resolution is acceptable for most use cases. (I'd not recommend the Jolla Phone as an eBook reader though.) If you are interested in Sailfish as an operating system and find a source that sells it for a low price (and only then), why not... except:

We don't know when to expect a new phone. Jolla once said there will be one in 2015, but plans and priorities change. I guess you'll be unhappy if you buy a new phone now and then see them present the next model at the Mobile World Congress 2015.

Have you tried searching for used ones in forums?

For my use case the phone is very good. I get about 2-4 days battery life from one charge. I mostly use email, calendaring, telegram, some web browsing, the camera and twitter, sometimes maps - althougn I'm moving to a new city so will probably use maps a bit more in the future. I guess I would rank as not a very heavy user of a smart phone. I don't use facebook, don't play any games on the phone and run as few android applications as I can get away with (currently just Telegram and BTSync). If you're phone usage is similar to that, then I don't think you are going to have a problem with the chip.

Screen resolution is a bit low, that's true but I haven't found that to be a problem. The maps on the phone are very good, the only issue is that you need a data connection. You can use Here maps for Android, but that is a bit power hungry (still in beta though) for offline maps.

I wouldn't imagine switching from a midrange android feel like much of a downgrade. For the computing power the phone has you get quite a lot. Keep in mind that android is pretty resource (CPU and memory) hungry. Sailfish OS in my experience much less so.

As for the second device, I would guess that you're in for a long wait.

I would not buy the phone at list price at this point, but your mileage may vary.

The hardware is certainly showing its age (or Sailfish is really poorly optimized for this hardware platform). My phone is lagging, freezing and dropping frames all over the place, when running more than a handful of apps.

I don't know the state of the Sailfish images for Nexus devices, but I would start by investigating that. The Nexus 5 is a nice device for the same or less money than a Jolla.

I ordered my Jolla about a month ago, and I have been very happy. There is nothing exceptional about it. And the device's self-noise has bothered me (as I mainly use it as an audio-device, really. Great support for filetypes). I ordered it with the €100 off coupon, and at that price the phone is certainly worth it!

However, I recently got an invoice from fedex for VAT. The invoice was almost exactly €100 as Jolla had sent FedEX the wrong invoice (not including the €100 discount). I am getting nowhere with FedEX. They say that Jolla made the mistake and should fix it. I have had little luck with Jolla so far, but I am hoping that they will do the right thing. It is pretty much their whole marketing slogan: "We are not the terrible big guys just out to use you.. We are #unlike them". The OS truly is unlike the competition, and a lot of fun to use.

Suggestion to Jolla: No company should sign their costumer service correspondence with "Sincerely, *company_name Customer Care".

My phone was sent in two times for repair of "sudden reboot problematic". So the phone is not really usable anymore in my case. Sailfish is beginning good, but there are no improvements for a while. No new features, and also very few native apps. So you need to use many android apps and can buy a android phone directly. I can make a list with minimum 20 small things missing for me. And there is still no other half using the I2C feature (except the keyboard, which is 3d party and looks not very good).

You should make a list of features wich you meed and then check here if Jolla can fullfill your needs.

In my case I am very disapointed aftr all.

Next regards from germany;)

I solved the spontaneous reboots by cleaning the battery contacts, as suggested elsewhere. The only problem I have is the occasional speaker silence, as mentioned elsewhere. Are they still selling new phones with bad speakers? That's the only important thing I would ask. Otherwise it's a good device with an OS that does not send all my data somewhere I don't know and lets me do whatever I want.
