I rephrase this question because it is specific to the next phone.

Someone suggested creating an Other Half stereo camera, and while that would be OK for the current phone which does not have the hardware, it is not ideal because you want to swap TOH's for colouring, and normally third party TOH's that you also want to use will not have it.

This functionality means having 2 things:

  • Stereo camera
  • Autostereoscopic display (having a 3D camera but not a 3D screen is lame)

Many people will say 3D is a dead fad, but very few have experienced how cool a real 3D camera like the ones from Fujifilm is.

There's a rumour going around than the next iPhone might be like this, to take into account where the competition might be going. It does not seem too far fetched as there's only so many cores, pixels, and inches you can throw at a new phone.

Again, you are suggesting a niche thing that the average user wont really care about. I would rather have them focus on the software side and simply make the next phone "better" in all aspect like simply having a better screen, more ram, faster processor and such. Its boring but thats what the majority would be happy with :)

Yes, and the people who have experienced that still say it's a fad. There is literally no point in wasting resources on this.

I vote against this.

3D might be a nice feature for some people. If you have a completely matured product with perfect hard- and software and run out ideas this feature might be considered. While the Jolla Phone and Sailfish OS are great, they are not perfect. So I think it would be best to first concentrate on a second iteration of the Jolla Phone with an up-to-date screen, CPU, GPU, RAM, battery and so on. Even if you only consider the screen I think it is more important to enhance the resolution or switch to something AMOLED like to enable a Glance Scree like feature.

Additionally to the required hardware work, the is a lot of software work required and the UI has to be largely redesigned to take full advantage of the 3D functionality.

So I think the resources required for implementing a 3D experience should be used to fix/implements some of the more important requests on TJC.

But this eventually might be an interesting feature for a Jolla Phone 3 or later
