It is good that the battery is removable, but to be truly practical it needs a charger, like this really cool original accessory (check out the video):

I wanted to buy an extra battery from the Jolla shop, but I found none. If this is because the extra battery can not be shipped by air by itself, maybe it could if it was in such a charger ("in the device").

It is not true that the battery cannot be shipped by air by itself. Some carriers refuse them but some carry them, of course, provided they are packed one by one and then re-packed in pairs. Anyway, those who refuse them will also refuse to carry battery-powered equipment.

There are new international rules since some time. There are special conditions according to which it is possible to ship batteries, but it is not available to the general user. The general conditions only allow batteries in the cargo hold if they are inside the device. The battery vendors are campaigning for a solution to the problem.

eBay and Amazon sellers send and receive their batteries all the time. If they can, why cannot Jolla do it?

Thanks, but that is not something to carry everyday, unlike the BlackBerry USB battery chargers.

If you are brave enough, you can hack a Galaxy S3 battery to work in the Jolla. I did but this requires a fair amount of work and manual skill.

@objectifnul This can be done since the Jolla battery cell is the same type as the Galaxy S3. You must take an S3 battery (I used a SCUD one, very high quality), remove the top, expose the PCB. Then you must change the thermistor or, more likely, the resistor that is placed on the PCB to emulate the thermistor: the S3 uses a 4.7 kOhm resistor, the Jolla needs 10 kOhm. Then you have to move the PCB containing the contacts to the left to match the Jolla battery contact position, and finally you have to find a way to make a replacement top plastic cover. You can cut the S3 cover and move it to the left, then stick it with some Kapton tape (ugly solution but it works); or you can create a mold with modelling clay matching the top battery of the Jolla, then pour some Araldite or similar epoxy resin and then place the PCB board in the appropriate position to create an epoxy "cap" to fit on the new battery; or you can use the bare PCB with no top at all, taking care to avoid short circuits when placing the battery in the phone.

they don't have spare batteries. that is why they are not available. this late in the Jolla's life cycle, it's very unlikely that they will have a production run of them.

Well the issue of batteries supposed to be not shipped is incomprehensible to me. I purchased many batteries on line for other devices. Most of them were shipped from U.S. or from China to Europe without problem. Maybe there is a bizarre regulation in Finland about batteries?

EDIT - If spare batteries are never available for Jolla #1, of course I will never buy a Jolla 2nd generation unless spare batteries are available immediately.

They don't need special Finnish regulations. The new international ones are draconian enogh. I think they were motivated by the 787.
