Device Lock bypass to an open Android App

Device configuration: Running 1.1.0.39 Display set to sleep after 10 minutes Device lock set to lock automatically after 10 minutes and allow feeds while locked.

Problem: When leaving an Android application running that overrides a display sleep (Virgin TV Anywhere for example), the device lock will enact after 10 minutes but does not blank the screen and continues to allow the Android application to be fully interacted with. On switching out of that application the device lock screen is then displayed.

Of course if say watching a video then it would be fair to say that the display needs to be shown regardless of display sleep/device lock settings.

What is in question is how much one should be able to interact with such applications when the device is actually locked without the lock screen appearing or under what circumstances an application can override screen/device lock settings? Not maybe a problem if giving access to change channels on a TV but not desirable if giving access to files/data.

Nokia here is another example. If you close this app after navigating you will get the lock screen.
