Edit: Related to /636/custom-push-actions-gestures/
We're after a compromise here, considering all the different users... For each, they have their most used features and they want a quick access to those. For one it's ambience, other settings, then notfications, then running apps list, then bookmarks, then camera/photos, then music libraries, then people, then latest new apps in store... The way to go is enabling CUSTOMIZING as far as possible. What's locked now are:
- the location & entering method of screens
- the amount of screens (exept for launcer, which get's a new screen below when needed)
- the home screen limited to 2 contents (0-9 visible covers, 4 most important apps)
- the setting quick swithes ([edit: remove] location only at settings primary screen)
- [edit: add] the content of the lock screen
- [edit: add] the screen brightness lowest/highest percentage
- [edit: add] the screen shutdown time lowest/highest time
We have plenty of gestures for moving (swipe to 4 directions, swipe from the edge 4 directions, hold+swipe 4 directions makes 12, and all these are done with just one finger. We have a Touch screen supporting double-finger and triple-fingre etc... gestures. Unlimited amount of choises. Unused opportunities. So, why not let the user decide where each gesture leads? And let user decide how many items are in each screen/bar/menu, and of course, what items - even more, what type of items.
To go on beyond unlike, a screen can be divided to header/body/footer which each could have own item types and gestures. Rolling the footer horizontally, having like 12 most used apps. Rolling the header vertically, having like 12 most used settings switches. Or hiding the whole header to have more room for the body, if you don't use the settings that much. Or changing the header to show your favourite people/photos/music..., changing the footer for your notifications, the body for your several calendars... you know, this could go forever. Just turn it UNLIKELY CUSTOMIZABLE. Break the experience. Forget the old - we've seen that already. Have fun!
The ambiance switcher could be the way it is at the lock screen and then the space left or right from the launcer could be used for this, nice idea!
jaine ( 2013-12-24 22:48:50 +0200 )edit@jaine Yeah, really nice what you thought. Independently of extending the home-screen, moving the Ambiance Switcher at the Lock-Screen level, is smart :-). Edit: It's funny, but I can switch ambience from both the home screen and the lock screen, a bug?
NikosAlexandris ( 2013-12-24 22:52:26 +0200 )editShould the 1/9 covers still be used then? The 1/4 covers could be used as well then, as they are more easy to read.
Kondou ( 2013-12-24 22:55:59 +0200 )edit@Kondou I'd opt for 1-9 covers. And "force" all developers/app submitters to have really nice and readable fonts for the covers which, currently, is not the case for every app I've seen.
NikosAlexandris ( 2013-12-24 22:58:49 +0200 )editHmm .. who need "Ambience quick switch" .. who switch Ambience too often ? Will better use L/R screens for quick acces to something other. :)
Kaacz ( 2013-12-25 01:02:18 +0200 )edit@Kondou Or allow user to decide whether 2x2 or 3x3 apps would be max per page?
JiiHoo ( 2013-12-25 01:20:12 +0200 )editAn edge gesture to switch through apps in the task view is not good IMHO. OTOH, it would have to be an edge gesture when implemented this way, or it would collide with the cover actions.
How about defaulting to 9 apps, but when you have more apps running, a (+) button will appear to reveal the other apps, so you get a looong list to scroll like on the N9. After tapping on an app, the view reduces to 9 apps again. This way you could see and access all your apps, but still don't have to scroll through all open apps to reach the launcher.

keep {left of Lock: Ambience}{Lock}{right of Lock: Ambience}, but change {left of Home: 0-9 pinned covers}{Home: 0-9 active covers}{right of Home: 10-... active covers, horisontally scrollable, oldest = rightmost}
phle ( 2013-12-25 22:16:50 +0200 )edit(re Ambience switcher accessible from both Lock and Home screen) Not a bug, as it's mentioned in the Jolla User Guide
