Detailed explanation of Android compatibility for potential buyers

Don't get me wrong. I like Sailfish OS. I would like to have all native apps and not use Android apps at all. I think many people active in the Jolla Community thinks that way. Also I think that most of the people here on TJC reads and questions more than the average buyer before buying a new product.

I would like to point something out that I have noticed lately: more and more average buyers are buying (or should be buying) Jolla products. Average buyers don't do a lot of reading and questioning when buying a new phone. Most of them want to have the same possibilities on their new phones as they had on their previous ones. One of the main reasons why they could decide to buy Jolla is the Android compatibility, because most of them will know that there are not many native apps and that the OS itself is still in its early stage.

When they buy Jolla with that reasoning in mind, many of them could be disapointed, because the Android compatibility is far from being ideal. This could cause bad publicity for Jolla.

I think Jolla should do something about it. Potential "average" buyers should know exactly what to expect from this Android compatibility.

This is the text regarding Android compatibility featured on Jolla's site :

"Android capability: Sailfish OS has the in-built capability to run Android apps on your Jolla. So you can continue using your favourite apps like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter as well as downloading all the latest ones via the Yandex and Aptoide Stores and other Android™ marketplaces."

I would suggest to Jolla to add a link in this text where interested people would have the possibility to read and become familiar with the facts regarding Android compatibility. The text should include all major facts and details about this topic (what is working out of the box, what needs to be adjusted by the user, what is not working at all, what can be expected in the future etc.).

That Android compatibility text by Jolla should clearly indicate what Android version i.e 4.1.2 Jolla is capable to run.

There are already lot of applications, which require Android version 4.3 e.g. applications, which are using the Blue tooth Smart or BLE or BT 4.0

The Android version information should be already given for the Jolla tablet as well, weather it will be better than current 4.1.2

"the Android compatibility is far from being ideal" - I couldn't disagree more.

For me the experience with Android layer is exactly ideal. To the point I am really surprised it works so well. I didn't expect it to be so good.

All the applications I used on my previous Android phone work on Jolla just fine. My whole Humble Bundle games library works great on Jolla phone. I even installed Google Play store and it works flawlessly. The whole experience with Android apps was a pleasure, and the quote you mentioned describes it accurately.

No it doesn't describe it accurately. For example considering just whatsapp, it doesn't tell you that you must have the UI open to receive messages, that you can't import contacts from whatsapp groups to phone contacts, that you must reboot the Android VM to import newly added contacts. I don't even know if these are bugs to be addressed in some future version or definitive limitations

Then I'm even more glad that I do not use this insecure, siloed crap.

I couldn't disagree more with you. As much as I love my Jolla, Android support is far from complete. I did not use many apps on my Android device, but almost all of them do not work on Jolla. While some of those apps might start, but...

  • FuelLog - Jolla switches to a numeric keyboard while entering prices (so no separator for entering cents)
  • Pebble - no bluetooth support
  • Audi MMI Connect - many functions did not work, as they seem to depend on Google Play Services
  • current version of Audi MMI Connect cannot be installed, as it requires Android >= 4.3

While there are for sure many apps that 'just work', there are also many apps that do not - or only in a limited manner.

Therefore more details on what exactly is supported (Android version, NFC, BT, WIFI direct,...) seems mandatory to me.
