Linking an unknown number doesn't display contact name in notification

When I get a message from an unknown number and then link the number to a contact, the next time I get a message from that number, the number is displayed on the notification instead of the contact name. Is there a way to unlink and relink the number so that the contact name will be displayed?
BTW, the linking was done by swiping in the message to the unknown numbers contact details and then link with the known contact
