Get rid of the HERE package [answered]

The HERE package is a nuissance. A big fuss in the EULA without actually stating what it is good for. I don't need navigation, and If I may want it on special occasions, I may use it or some other application or service. But afterwards I want to close/stop it. The GPS has to be switched-off-able, it draws too much power anyway. And it has to be available to other applications as well. And I don't need to be tracked either. Let me disable or remove this HERE. Is it doable ?

I didn't proceed past the EULA acceptance yet. And. Such a restriction should be made public before purchase.

afaik GPS is switched off until required by applications regardless of whether or not its enabled in the settings menu.

It would be great if one could use the service from Mozilla instead. And maybe with an implementation of Mozstumbler.

Settings>System>Location and you can disable the AGPS or GPS completely. Apps will work with GPS only.

Here maps can also be uninstalled.

Whats the fuss about.

The fuss about ? An entire section of the to be acknowledged EULA is spent for the HERE. Stating, that I must not interfere with the service or result. With the possible meaning that I may not even stop it. I mean there are other maps that don't want me acknowledge anything. If they provide a map - fine. I can acknowledge then. If they want to charge me for it, fine. I can consider it. But as part of the EULA of a product, that has little to no relation to it.. would not be necessary.

@zacc - The latest release notes makes the below reference, not sure of the reason though. Anyways, I am not reading much into it. MapsUsage of Maps is now governed by the common Sailfish EULA http:/jolla.com/sailfish-eula, application specific EULA has been removed https://together.jolla.com/question/71741/release-notes-software-version-11127-vaarainjarvi/

This bugged me, too, when I got my Jolla, so here's what I found out:

You can completely disable GPS and HERE, and it won't draw power, and it won't track you.
The GPS by itself can be quite slow in acquiring a lock, it apparently needs a good initial position, and it doesn't work very well if they are too many obstructions (buildings, or indoors). So the Jolla additional uses the Nokia HERE service, which estimates the position from your mobile connection. It needs a mobile data connection (which you can disable), and needs to make a query using the data connection, and this will leave tracks at both Nokia and your provider. Hence the EULA.
All position providers (HERE and GPS) are available to other applications via the geoclue API on the DBUS.

I completely agree with you that finer control over the GPS and its features is desirable, and there should be an option to disable HERE and only use GPS, and one should be able to set a initial position and load a current almanach by other means.

But if you don't need geolocation at all, just switch it off, and you'll be fine.

But that is, in fact, possible. In Settings -> Location, disable 'Faster position fix' and you disable using HERE services. You can also revoke the agreement by using the pulley menu to 'Show agreement', then using it again to 'Revoke agreement'.
