Android's share function always opens email app [released]

Selecting the share function in Android applications, after Update 10, opens always a new mail. In update 8 and earlier, it would open first a list of applications to select the medium to use.

For example it is now not possible to send tweets, documents or images to Pocket or Feedly.

Update by @anandrkris - I have tried it on Quora, Soundcloud, Telegram, etc. Sharing doesn't seem to invoke Android app but only opens email.

Added here for better visibility (hopefully) - https://together.jolla.com/question/74971/11127-list-of-regression-issues/

EDIT: Present in 1.1.2 as well.

EDIT: Present in 1.1.6 as well.

EDIT: Present in 1.1.7.24/25 early access ...as well (hope it will come back with sailfish 2.0 which was advertised in the promo video as having upgraded/better android compatibility)

EDIT: Present in 2.0.0.10 early access as well.

EDIT: Fixed in 2.0.1.7

Yes, even i have faced this issue.

Yes, it is happening to me, too, and it is quite an annoying regression.

Hip-hooray for the email sharing improvement, though! (it's now possible to share via mail using the Sailfish mail app) :)

Indeed, share option seems to be broken but it doesn't always open email app. Since release of u10 (as I remember correctly issue appeared already in u9) I've found some apps properly sharing content between available choices though it's very small group and I don't use them frequently. I wonder what caused this regression and if share option is going to come back anytime soon ? I'm starting to miss it :(

No response from Jolla on this regression, so far. :-(

I would really appreciate that.

This is taking far too long to fix. I'm seriously considering returning the Jolla tablet as soon as I get it.

@dez - Any update on this? I'm sure this is functioanlly critical for many of us.

@anandrkris I'll ask Android support maintainers

I just hate all this workarounds, but as we have no bug fix from Jolla you can use this plug-in by @coderus. It adds share to Android functionality to the native SFOS apps and fixes the bug in the Android app's share.

Edit 1: Added some screenshots as a proof. This is an Android WPS Office app:

Opened document and selected share. App list to share is shown:

Selected Pushbullet app and it opens:

So no more bug with share functionality appearently after installing this plug-in.

Edit 2: Sorry for being slightly over optimistic. Apps I use daily works ok now, so I've decided the share functionality works everyware. But it seems to be not so simple. Just tested all of my Android apps. Share functionality really works, but not everyware. Some apps work just great, some not. And some of the apps works but in a wierd way. Here is the full list:

Share works:

  • WPS Office
  • Pocket
  • ES File Explorer
  • Behance

Works, wierd ways:

  • WhatsApp — if you select (tap and hold) an image in your conversation and then tap "share" icon, "email bug" would be triggered. To really share a file, you should open it (just tap) and then go to the menu and select "share". This would start the "normal" share screen.
  • Amazon Kindle — inside your book tap the share icon. Share screen shows with just few options. If you tap "more" icon here "email bug" shows itself.

Still not working:

  • Gett
  • MS Office Mobile
  • Yandex.Disk
  • Yandex.Maps
  • MS OneDrive
  • Ultimate Rugby
  • PushBullet

And, finally, the TED app just closes if I tap the share icon.

Anyway, it looks like @coderus's plug-in added something to the system that can help fix the "email bug", hope it would help.

Hmm, I know. Thanks for sharing. Will check it out.

IT'S NOT A PATCH! It's standalone library for shareui and small android helper service.

coderus ( 2015-10-26 11:12:50 +0300 )edit

@coderus Yes, sure! Sorry for the wrong determination!

Btw, thank's! It works great!

rburkhanov ( 2015-10-26 11:15:48 +0300 )edit

Nice tool, but not a workaround for this bug. This bug is about sharing from Android to Android or SFOS NOT about SFOS to Android.

@jrypl Please, read my answer carefully. «It adds share to Android functionality to the native SFOS apps and fixes the bug in the Android app's share».

No, it does not. On my Phone non of the above "working" apps has a proper working share function after installaing ShareUI.

As in my case it does not. Also I don't think of it as a bug cause it appeared right before the copy/paste feature between sailfish native and android apps landed in some early access update to sailfish. I assume it was necessary for jolla devs to fullfil then much awaited by jolla community feature and only suitable way to do it was to remove some android layer responsible for sharing text based messages ( because only those are not transferred/shared between droid apps. Try to share some file to another app. It most probably will succed ) and use it for clipboard. I would love to be wrong in this case.

Mądry ( 2015-10-27 22:12:47 +0300 )edit

Yes this was a regression of Update 10 where we got copy paste for Android. I recently removed regression from topic title becuase we have almost moved to 2.0 now and thought let's just call it a bug.
