Reading all the posts about different messenger apps tells me, we need a easy expandable messaging system (similar to the good old Web OS days :-)

  1. It should be easy possible to add a new messaging service to it via market
  2. All messages should be visible and handled at one place
  3. The system should remember the favorite way to communicate with a contact
  4. The system should support secure communication (end to end encryption, OTR, etc.)

The current messaging system is pretty close to what you're describing - it uses an IM framework called Telepathy. New protocols can be added by adding new connection managers, and OTR is in progress for XMPP.

This is not specific to Sailfish, by the way - additional work would be required to integrate with Sailfish's account manager. I'm not entirely sure what would be involved with that.

Thank for pointing that out. I was not aware of that.

It's not quite that simple though: Adding a new telepathy connection manager will not do anything for the user. You'd still need at least a way to manage accounts for this new type of protocol. Also, it's not possible ATM to distribute such plug-ins via the Jolla Store.
