With the recent addition of Flip To Mute, it would make sense to add another gesture-triggered interaction. Lift to wake.
This feature is currently available in BlackBerry 10 and is quite pleasant to use.
When the phone sits on a flat surface for a longer time, it reacts to a significant change of angle (lift off) by waking up.
It would be nice to see this on Jolla as well (as an option in the settings).

I would not want my Jolla to wake up everytime I lift it from any flat surface. Maybe I just want to move it or put it in my pocket while letting it stay sleeping, locked or closed. If I just want to glance it I can enable the LPM feature and hide the proximity sensor for few seconds and then activate the screen. To wake up the phone it is just so easy to fouble-click the screen or press the power button, that I see no clear use case that would warrant this lift-to-wake gesture. On the contrary, it would make the UX and predictability of device response to handling the phone quite poor.
That is why I suggest it as an option (like it is on BB10 - disabled by default). It is not something I could not live without, but I was quite surprised how well this function works. I also have LPM enabled, but this use-case is different. When I have my Jolla on a table, it takes just a double tap (or covering the sensor) to check the time. On the other hand, when I pick the phone up, it is not for checking the time, but for an interaction - and that's where the wake-up comes handy.

Also, there are so much more basic interactions and UI related system integrations and enhancements in the pipeline or waiting for to be roadmapped that this lift-to-wakeup gesture should not be priotrized very high. Mostly because the use cases for actually wanting to wake up phone by moving it are extremely rare and not clearly specified.

Leaving aside the discussion on convenience, there is a reason why this is not likely to be implemented in the near future which to be honest is quite disenchanting for me.
According to spiiroin, features like the one you mentioned would require serious changes to firmware as for now it only listens for double-tap or power key to wake up the phone. Listening for any other event would "increase idle time energy consumption by factor 4".

Typical accelerometer chips have a feature where you can configure an acceleration threshold, then the chip can send a hardware IRQ when the acceleration exceeds that threshold, thus possibly waking up a sleeping CPU this way. If the Jolla is wired for this, then this might not increase energy consumption (much).

What do you think about following: when you lift your phone the phone is not turning on, but just LPM is turning on? (covering prox. sensor is actually quiet inconvinient)
