[Feature request] Allow choosing between POP/IMAP when mail server (GMX) provides both

I use gmx for my personal mail. When I first set up my mail account on jolla, it was behaving like a mail program of the stone age. At some point I realized this was due to actually using a mail protocol of said age: POP.

GMX provides both IMAP and POP. Jolla should either default to choosing IMAP or allow me to choose. K9-mail, thunderbird and Kmail all choose IMAP by default, some (I think it was thunderbird) offering the choice.

Manually entering the following works:

incoming:
imap.gmx.net
SSL
port 993

outgoing:
mail.gmx.net
SSL
port 465
Password

Officially it's gmx pro feature I think isn't it?

yes, but unofficially "every" other client uses it. That is actually how I found out about IMAP being available to non paying customers like me.

I knowI use it too as a normal non-pro-costumer ;D

something like that? (from https://jolla.com/guide/)

POP/IMAP

If you want to set up POP3 or IMAP, go into icon-launcher-settings.png | Accounts just the same, but pull down to add an account, then choose "Email".

From here, you can add POP/IMAP account information. This means you will need your username and password for your email account, and the server name (or IP address). Also any secure connection details (SSL, TLS or "Not in use"); and port numbers.

sorry rudi, I don't understand your question/proposal. My "problem" is that there is an automatic way that saves me finding out these parameters which however gives suboptimal results.

I'll check this again, but last time I checked IMAP was only allowed for PRO accounts, there's no guarantee GMX will not block the access to other accounts using it, and since there's no way to detect if account is PRO or not, we provide only POP settings by default. You can always configure the account manually and select IMAP as noted in the comments above.

sounds like a valid concern, maybe add a hint or, as suggested, offer the choice. For me it took some time to realize this is not the fault of jollas mail programm but due to using POP3 ...

I had the same problem as described in the original post, and I have been using GMX IMAP as a free user for years now. The problem as I see it lies in the missing information during setup. There should be a kind of summary shown in the setup process that states account type and server settings - ideally with a possibility to manually edit and correct the settings.

Using Thunderbird there is this kind of transparent confirmation and possibility to edit these details.
