Disable sim card switch/ fake it

I manually cut my Sim card down to micro format. Apparently I cut a bit too much away. Jolla doesn't want to recognize the sim, however it still works in the old phone (it is somewhat stuck in place there, so it thankfully doesn't matter that the old phone expects a mini format card). I read about and identified the hardware sim detection switch on the jolla, however pushing it left doesn't seem to be working/sufficient. (I will eventually pay the 15€ my provider is asking for a new micro card)

I'm wondering if there is something along the lines of

echo "on" > /proc/that/switch

that would tell the kernel that the switch was toggled?

Why not just change provider? Might be enough just to make a deal with another operator and your current one will call you after a while and try to keep you as their customer by making a deal with you. Then tell them that your only reason for change is to get a new SIM card. At that point they rather provide the SIM and have you as a happy customer. If not then it's their loss.

Not sure how it works wherever you're from, but in Finland every kind of operator blackmailing is common and strongly encouraged :)

Well, the contract is "for-free" because it comes as part of my parents DSL subscription. So paying 15€ once is still the cheaper option compared to 10€ monthly that any other contract would cost.

I cannot answer your last question, but there is another possibility.

When I received a micro-sim form my mobile provider I detected that the sim slot in Jolla is larger as the micro-sim, so I wonder whether Jolla actually takes mini-sim.

When I called my mobile provider to ask for a new SIM card, they offered me a SIM card adapter instead of a new SIM card. The adapter is a plastic frame that fits around the micro SIM, and this works perfectly well.

The adapter is easily removable, so this way you are very flexible to use your SIM card in different phones with differing SIM card size.

Jolla certainly takes a Micro SIM, not mini as you might suspect. See here for a little info; Micro vs Mini SIM

Yes, you are right. According to SIM-Micro-Nano myy SIM is a Nano SIM card, and the adapter I got is Nano to Micro.
