Edit: apparently this is a bug, so I'm changing it to such...

I use POP/SMTP for my email for two accounts. When I send an email from my phone, there is no copy saved in my sent folder, which I would like to do for record/reference sake. It would be good to be able to turn on the facility to do this - if it isn't. If it is, does anyone know how to do it?

@skanky - You mean in the phone sent folder ? because if you are using POP it will not save the email in the server side, since POP has only Inbox folder, rest are local folders.

POP is for reading mail. The mail is being sent using SMTP. There should be a copy of any email sent via SMTP saved in the local Sent folder (or more ideally, a configurable local folder as some like to keep them threaded with the incoming emails). The fact that the other folders are local, and the new email was created locally means there should be no issue saving this outbound email.

Also, it would hellp in actually knowing it went out successfully, it would be nice to have it. When I sent some emails from my phone, they just vanished. I had no idea what had happened to them, until I got replies. Being able to check Outbound and Sent for outgoing SMTP emails is pretty standard.

@skanky - Are you sure you are sending the email from the same account you are checking the sent folder ? you can expand email composer to check the from field. I just tried and it works as expected, sent emails are saved in the local Sent folder.

Thanks for testing this. I have (had) two email accounts on my phone - both POP/SMTP. When I tried it, I checked the sent folders for both and both were empty (I tried sending from both accounts, too).

Unfortunately my phone is currently with Jolla, so I can't test again. When it gets back, I'll have another play. There may be some account setting that affects it, but it wasn't obvious to me which one it was (if any).

@skanky - For POP it should not depend on server settings, since is all done locally, then please report back we can look at the logs if problem persist.

Thanks, but I thought that was specific to imap as I don't get any saved sent emails?

if sent mails do not end up in one of your account's Sent folder then this should be changed to a bug report (tag bug, name bug)

Thanks, have done so.

Okay, I got my phone back yesterday and it had been factory reset (as expected). I've just tested it and now the sent emails are being saved in he Sent folder. So unfortunately we can't debug it.

@VDVsx I have the same problem. I have only one e-mail account configured (IMAP, workplace server); messages are sent and received properly, I have a folder named "Sent" but no copy is retained. Is it possible to reopen this bug report?

Federico ( 2015-04-11 23:22:32 +0300 )edit

@Federico - Is the device in English language ? if not search for additional "Sent" folder in the device language, check also in the server side what's the "Sent" folder name there.

VDVsx ( 2015-04-13 08:33:32 +0300 )edit

@VDVsx Yes, both the Jolla and the IMAP folders are in English, and from what I can tell from Thunderbird/Webmail the Sent folder is named Sent. The only weird thing is that I see an empty folder called "Outbox" (which shouldn't exist) listed in the Jolla mail app. I tried creating it on the server, too, just to make sure that the sent e-mails weren't going there ,but that doesn't make any difference. Is there any error log file that I can check for the mail app?

@Federico - Outbox is a local folder, is normal to have in mobile devices to store emails that fail to send due to network or similar issues.

you can collect logs like this:

in

/home/nemo/.config/QtProject/Messageserver.conf

enable file log and add a path for the log, like for example:

[FileLog]
Enabled=1
Path=/home/nemo/Documents/messageserver.log

Then restart the device or just restart messageserver5

systemctl --user stop messageserver5
systemctl --user start messageserver5

Reproduce the problem by sending couple of emails and wait a bit before copying the log file, send me the log file to mail-logs at jolla dot com. After that turn file log off again by setting "enabled" to 0.Thanks a lot!
