Could it be there's just something wrong with the ID3 tags? Have you tagged them with MusicBrainz?

Good point @nthn - many of my mp3's have been collected over more than a decade (no problem with my old N9!), but I have purposely loaded tagged and untagged mp3's. I have not personally or knowingly ever tagged any of my music collection, never heard of MusicBrainz either. :) I'm still fiddling around now, reducing album art (once again), renaming tracks with uniformity and much more, I'm slowly running out of ideas - so you may have a valid point. It's been a long time since I bought or downloaded from legit sources - with that in mind, perhaps I should try a 'paid for' track or album and see the results - I'm open to suggestions all the way!

MusicBrainz is a service that hosts tags for loads and loads of music, you can use MusicBrainz Picard (or other things, I use the inbuilt tag editor of my music player) to tag your music. Do take a look if retagging an album that way manages to fix the issue.

It is easy to miss the problem because album art extracted on older versions of Sailfish remain in the .cache directory and will still be read by the media player.

I have deleted this cache recently, killed tracker, did a hard-reset, re-started it... and not one single album cover showed up after that. That clearly cannot be due to malformed ID3-tags, because older versions of Sailfish were able to extract the images quite well.

Oh right, I was only thinking about the different albums being lumped together, not about the album art issue. No idea what could be the issue with that, works fine for me™.
