Could the browser get Up/Down navigation buttons?
tl;dr Basic navigation is a necessity, not a bonus feature.
The latest update allows back-navigation in browser session history via the primary navigation/address bar. The secondary navigation bar (shown by tapping the bottom right (parallel horizontal lines) icon shows a forward button when some forward navigation is available (ie. from navigation history - I did not test meta tags relating to navigation). There is space on the secondary navigation bar for up and down arrows, to ascend and descend through the URL name, token and directory (hash, question mark and forward slash-delimited) structure. Please add the up and down navigation arrows to the secondary navigation bar to allow speedier website navigation.
Original text: Depending on the state of the browser tab, one or the other (or frequently both) of the forward and back buttons occupy redundant screenspace. The space taken up by the back button could be better served as giving access to session history (not overall history: to me this is a critical distinction).
The enabling feature of the space the forward-back button would have is a left (back, onto the text of the location field) or right (forward, off-screen) swipe. Upswipe (onto the webpage area) could navigate to the parent directory (local file system or Internet). Downswipe could navigate further into the directory structure when applicable (when present in session history).
This is a feature request including several parts of the relevant QML and associated code, but they go together in this one submission because all are not useful alone, but only in combination.
Of course, though Up and Down seem to go together, in terms of navigation, which down? might require a user decision less simple than the action to go down or to not. If a page has links as follows, there is the question again: which one?:
./ (down, or tab-enter)
./pigeon/ (downdown, or tab-tab-enter)
./www/ (downdowndown, or tab-tab-tab-enter)
./readme (downdowndowndown , or tab-tab-tab-tab-enter)
The answer might not be obvious yet must be addressed, I imagine, before Down can be in the GUI, perhaps long after Up would be happily fixed. It could mitigate the lack of [Tab] in the virtual keyboard in situations where the key would have been available.
thats a really cool idea! :) and actually the forward button annoys me too because i think ive actually never ever used it on my jolla
misc11 ( 2015-01-30 10:53:04 +0200 )editjep, wht has been bothering me for a while is the inconsistency that comes with browser back/ forth buttons vs UI back swipes. I'm already so used to the gestures that I end up swiping in the browser (nothing happens, "oh yeah, damn it: I need to use the symbols on the bottom!"). I understand that this is not an easy thing so solve as "just adding the normal gestures" would probably be unusable with a browser which has its own systematics. But if I understood you correctly, I think your suggastion could be a good compromise! providing the opportunity to swipe + no interference with the actual browser content! It would just need to be big enough so that its not to hard to do this "tiny swipe"
