I'm slightly annoyed that every time I install my white other half, it installs its ambience.

I would rather tell the system to stop using other halves like this, or rather, I would like a list of other halves installed, and be able to select an ambience to be selected when it is installed instead.

I realise that greater user customisation of what happens when an other half is attached, is likely on the cards, but for now I just need to stop the other half from forcing its ambiance on me when I remove/reinstall it whenever I want to change the SIM card.

(this is done because I still need features on my S2, so I'm swapping the SIM as needed)

It would be nice for example to have option to turn off other half recognition only for next time you put other half on...that means , you go to settings , turn other half recognition OFF, exchange sim card , put back other half , nothing happend...but next time if you don't turn off other half recognition in settings it would be active again...this way we could still have magic of other half and we could turn it off only if we need to put back same other half... :)

I would like the option to totally turn off ambiances, because they usually pick some odd font colours which result in poor contrast.

Additionally to a on/off persistent settings, it would good be to implement a 'remorse action' so when a TOH with ambience is detected the device shows a time-out bar "Changing ambience in 5 seconds".

Complete workaround at my blog, while waiting for the fix or new settings

  • Add to Settings -> System settings -> TOH Connection (switch off, switch on. Permanent until switched again.)

And for customization, add to Settings -> Customization -> TOH Connection

  • All actions (default)
  • Change ambience only
  • Change ringtones only
  • Run apps only
  • (Other options, depending on the upcoming TOH's)

I'm a big fan of customization, and I've presented adding this menu also in some other of my posts

The Ambience setting should follow the Other Half, imho.

A "newborn" Other Half could download and set an ambience (along with other software). If the user changes ambience then that ambience is associated with the current Other Half.

Detaching the Other Half for SIM or battery access should bring back the associated setting for that specific Other Half when reattached. Since tOH ID wouldn't change the associated settings would be the same and thus the ambience would be the one that the user expects.

You can stop TOH demon by issuing this command as root: systemctl stop tohd.service . It will last until reboot or until you start the demon again. This will also improve greatly battery life.

or, if you don't want to tinker in the terminal: just block the NFC chip - located in The Other Half - with some tinfoil (see comment)
(added bonus: better battery life)

The basic issue of "every time I install my white other half, it installs its ambience" should have been solved with current latest upgrade 1.0.3.8, in a sense that there is now a way to change TOH without forcing a change in ambience. From the Release Notes (https://together.jolla.com/question/21786/release-notes-software-version-1038-naamankajarvi/) - > Highlights of improvements -> TOH:

On connecting the Other Half, associated ambience will not change unless it is being used for the first time or the ambiance has been earlier marked as favourite.
