@N900-users: missed features from N900/N9(50)?

I personally did not have a MeeGo N900-series phone. But I've heard that people love(d) that phone and its functions.

Because MeeGo and Sailfish are "OS-sisters" it should not be too difficult to port functions or apps from N900. So here are my questions to YOU and maybe requests to Jolla...

What function did the N900 have that isn't implemented in Sailfish yet?
What function do you miss most? ...even if not fully functional in N900 phone.
What connection possibilities do you miss? e.g. sync-tools.

Beside my curiousity my hope is to help Jolla developing faster/easier by forking beloved N900-functions. Therefore we need to know from you N900-users what IS missed. :-)

N900 run Maemo, not MeeGo, Jolla is SailFishOS, there are many s/w and h/w differences, for example different screen technologies almost dictate different type of apps, etc.

IMO, this is a very subjective question and its been already covered in separate threads. I feel, its not like Jolla team doesn't know what needs to be implemented. The constraint is time and limited resources.

SailfishOS is not meego/maemo brother/sister. It contains some legacy meego/maemo mw stuff, but not too much.

@rdmo python is already here for ages

Function missing:

productive document support (as offered by means of easy debian/open office/HW keyboard and Stylus in the N900)

Why I love N900 and Maemo: it allows me to be PRODUCTIVE and RESPONSIVE, because I can produce documents and process documents on the N900, can read and work on all sorts of files and so on, because N900/Meamo is open and had the basic tools on board.

Therefore. my answer is: I need tools to be productive like e.g. easy debian on the N900

In the sense of this blog, the Slogan that would aim at me would be:

BE PRODUCTIVE and RESPONSIVE

or "JOLLA makes you PRODUCTIVE and RESPONSIVE"

So far, the N900 is still better in this respect, but Jolla catches up and benefits from more processing power and a better user interface.

So I vote for: better (wider and more productive) file and document support

Being an N900 user I must accept how easy it was with keyboard to edit office documents. I even once had a mistake in a presentation and I could edit it with the open office in N900. Well coming to Jolla please vote and have a look at this thread asking for KDE office suite to be ported to Sailfish OS https://together.jolla.com/question/65413/port-calligra-gemini-to-sailfishos-as-native-office-suite/

I don't agree. FM transmitter is much more universal solution than bluetooth audio. I have a model year 2011 car and no bt audio. People tend to listen music in boats, summer houses etc. (I do) and would definately NOT carry any bt speaker with them whereas radio can be found everywhere...

Even though I do occasionally miss the FM transmitter, I feel that using either Bluetooth or an AUX input jack is an acceptable alternative.

I did use the N900 FM transmitter in a car, it is good and practical, BUT quality suffers, and quite often signals from other stations are mixed up.

@pmelas: I actually kindof miss driving in my car and having other transmitters briefly intermingling with my music thanks to the relatively weak transmitter in the N900! Kindof gave a sense of actual people around me on the road, rather than just metal contraptions hurtling through space on a flat plane ;)

One of the best things about the N900 (and probably the N9 as well) is the seamless integration of VoIP (especially SIP) into the dialer app. I've read there is no SIP integration on the Jolla. I've ordered a Jolla nevertheless and hope I figure out a way to make it work.

Full access to the filesystem through a common "Open" / "Save" dialog.

EDIT: Only the home directory and SD card were able to be accessed from the dialog (which is all the user has write access to anyway). :)

I don't have a Jolla yet. I will buy a Jolla when I receive my TOHKBD (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2028347278/tohkbd-the-other-half-keyboard-for-your-jolla). I hope I can continue to use the shell prompt. File system and documents are important. Being able to install your own applications, e.g. ported from another platform, both command line and GUI applications. On the N900 I use mostly browser, FBReader, Keepass and shell.

Yeah you could use devel-su to get a root shell after enabling the developer mode on Jolla. You could also install packages, instead of #apt-get install you have the fedora's #pkcon install

The text search hability. It is quite linked to the physical keyboard, but typing some part of a word and having a long list filtered out (in emails or in SMS history…), or the contact search that opens, is really handy.

It's hard to compare N900 with the Jolla Phone. While I loved the desktop experience from N900 I think Jolla does a great job making a modernized mobile OS with some desktop features like real multitasking, hackable Linux base and an open bootloader.

The features I miss from Maemo 5 (N900) and MeeGo Harmattan (N9 & N950) are full support for IM services under Messages like Facebook and Skype. I know Skype might not be possible do to needed MS license, but Facebook should be possible to implement. I saw I video with native Facebook integration in SailfishOS on Youtube. I saw before the release of the Jolla phone and was mostly likely taken out before release.

Landscape support and a psychical keyboard. Landscape support will mostly likely come with the tablet-optimized SailfishOS 2.0 and a keyboard toh has been made by the community.

Message threads and browser tabs to open in separate windows. This was some features I really liked on my N900. I could easily communicate with many people at the same time do to message threads which opened in separate windows. Also with browser tabs opened in separate windows it was easy to multitask.

Support for X window appps and X forwarding over SSH both from and to device. This was easy if a wanted to use a remote X app for a reason.

What is missing? The Maemo Extras feeling is...

the QA process (devel->testing->stable)
the repository
the feel (community anyone?)
the programs (xournal, columbus, extra-account-plugins, etc)

from core Maemo5 aka Fremantle I miss most SIP and the calendar, second is the Contacts look&feel and last but not least the mediaplayer!

Yeah, the Extras repo is the main thing I miss from the N900 days. OpenRepos does well enough most of the time, but it isn't the same kind of communal effort that spurred ports and group testing, and yeah, that sense of community. Although I'd almost say that Jolla has gained back some of the feeling of community that got lost in the tail end of the N9 era, so it's not all bad by any means.

I agree wholeheartedly. There isn't quite the same hacking community around the Jolla as there was around the N900, and I blame it mainly on two reasons: Lack of HW keyboard and lack of the three extras repos.

It is already said elsewhere: systemwide COPY and PASTE (via ctrl C and V on the physical keyboard ;-)) Even without a HW keyboard, I believe that this is a feature that should (and will) be inegrated in Sailfish soon.

It would be nice, but on the other hand it could be considered a serious security issue, especially if Android apps could steal data (passwords) from the rest of the system. I don't trust Android apps.
