Younited being sold to US [not relevant]
Article is in finnish, but F-Secure is selling their Younited-service to New Jersey based Synchronoss-company due to lack of paying customers: http://www.digitoday.fi/bisnes/2015/02/04/tekiko-f-secure-juuri-tylyn-oharin/20151504/66
This also means we probably never see native Younited integration.
Also seems like one of the ex-bosses of NSA has invested in the company so tinfoilhatters be extra careful: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/10/former-nsa-director-had-thousands-personally-invested-in-obscure-tech-firms/
Update: At the moment according to F-Secure the hosting servers will stay in Finland behind F-Secure encryptions, but Synchronoss will take over the customer side of the business and on long run they might migrate the servers to US: http://www.digitoday.fi/bisnes/2015/02/04/f-secure-emme-peta-younited-kaupalla-asiakaslupaustamme/20151503/66
ownCloud for ever :)
heubergen ( 2015-02-05 13:40:38 +0200 )edit@heubergen Yes, maybe it is finally time for me to look into that.
avhakola ( 2015-02-05 13:42:30 +0200 )editYounited just sold their U.S.P. So long Younited.
unruly ( 2015-02-05 15:09:09 +0200 )editSad news. Similar happened to Wuala, formerly a Swiss cloud service which was bought by Lacie. Finally Lacie became part of US-based Seagate. As a former Wuala user I had to realize that customer service somewhere "dissapeared" within the big Seagate company and heard of an example that an Iranian customer was blocked from using the service without any warning (because the company all the sudden had to follow US laws and thus respect their sanctions towards certain countries).
Anyways, good luck F-secure and like @heubergen, I recommend ownCloud :-)
molan ( 2015-02-05 15:12:04 +0200 )editIt didn't work after the last update anyway. So... (Given the quality of their service, the usability... I'm not surprised they didn't find enough paying customers.)
ossi1967 ( 2015-02-05 15:46:44 +0200 )editI can only recommend btsync. It's the best for file synchronizing over multiple devices. If you're own a nas for example qnap or synology a ready to use app is available. I never had issues with this. It's reliable. No big setup. Syncing in LAN is done at full speed. So try it :-). On sailfish sadly no native client is available. but for android. And the best -> no need for a centralized server hosting. All done on you're devices!!
carepack ( 2015-02-05 16:49:34 +0200 )editAnd that's why you never use cloud file storage. :-)
(at least for anything important or not end-to-end encrypted)
MartinK ( 2015-02-05 19:02:04 +0200 )editThe only safe cloud is the one I run on my own HW. and has always been so.
juiceme ( 2015-02-05 21:09:14 +0200 )editAs they say: There's no cloud, just other people's computers.
ossi1967 ( 2015-02-05 21:18:25 +0200 )editSad news, seems that all cloud (and social) services are based in US, and according to their laws they can access all data on those servers. No privacy to everyone. Lets see what Elfcloud is up to...
MikaN ( 2015-02-05 22:20:51 +0200 )editF-Secure/Younited for Jolla was nothing but empty promises for nearly a year, no native client ever, unfunctional and incomplete service even with the droid-client they provided after months of staying silent, unfriendly customer service in F+Secure/Younited site/forum, misinformation on future plans and complete lack of interest do actually serve their current and future customers anything useful, secure or functional cloudified share service accessible from Jolla devices. The only surprising element in the discontinuation announcement of promised Younited service is that some company is willing to buy it from F-Secure. But NSA-driven U.S-based personal data collection services/corps and orgs. seemingly are willing and able to do anything to get more private data under their surveilling Five Eyes (GCHQ etc +some scandaninavian countries like Sweden and apparently Finland now, too). Hopefully Jolla fully and completely drops all (if any) collaborations with and support for F-Secure/Younited. Shame on You(nited), F-Secure..
foss4ever ( 2015-02-06 00:08:08 +0200 )editI had tried this and didn't really see the point of adding to the existing mess. It didn't really seem to make things easier.
Just tried to delete my account, and it's really hard to do. You have to individually select each item (i.e. there is no "Select All") and move it to the trash and then empty that. On top of that, there is no way to delete the account itself.
Sanjay Mehta ( 2015-02-11 08:16:33 +0200 )edit@Sanjay_Mehta you probaly just have to stop using it, and leave the account to go stale by itself.
juiceme ( 2015-02-11 08:19:42 +0200 )editSo disappointed... Removed Younited from all devices after deleting all my content in Younited.
