Nokia-Mail / *@ovi.com dies on March 9

I may be the only one, but I guess I am not:

I did register my Jolla account and my Jolla tablet perks at Indigogo with my Nokia Mail. Since Yahoo is abandoning support for Nokia Mail on March 9, I will have a dead Jolla account and a dead Indigogo account on March 10 (invalid e-mail address).

I did change my e-mail address on both accounts and did contact Indigogo. As for my Jolla account, changing my e-mail in my profil did not change anything - I received Jollas 'Angry Birds Stella'-mail on my Nokia/Ovi account yesterday.

So, how about it? Will my Jolla account be dead on March 10?

Thank you for any further information!

The newsletters from Jolla are connected to another account - I wrote a longer answer below regarding both accounts, even that your problem gets solved with just the last part regarding Shop account

I am a long time ovi user, and my main email is (was) @ovi.com. Sadly, I received Microsoft communication, and moved to another service. I refused to move my mail to outlook.com, for obvious reasons. I digged a bit here and there, and went for a German service, mailbox.org, which provides an Open X-Change service, for 12€ a year, is definitely worth it. It even provides GPG encryption, and on Jolla is as simple as configuring an exchange account. Sadly they do not provide a way to import emails, but I managed to do it with OS software, and everything now is working, even more contact sync is ok, while on ovi/yahoo it didn't work.

suggest you get in contact with jolla via Zendesk. Think it is a genuine concern for you and others with ovi mail accounts.

Seriously, ability to change email address is something that I expect every online service have by defacto.

Your accounts both on the phone and at Jolla Shop will stay valid with an outdated email address, and your Jolla phone will work normally and get updates. You can still use the same username to login to both. However, after the actual email-box is closed, this causes the following issues:

  • Shop account: You won't receive any newsletters or other official customer mail
  • Shop account: You won't get confirmations or delivery information of your new orders
  • Jolla account (phone): You can't restore your password via email service at accounts.jolla.com, you'll need care to do that for you (and even they can't check who you are via a simple email)
  • Jolla account (phone): You might run into problems with Jolla Store apps which require an email confirmation (currently there are none)
  • There might be other issues...

As a fix for the Jolla account (phone): Recommeded way: You can simply update your email at https://account.jolla.com/ However, your old email might remain on Jolla's database or newsletter database on 3rd party service, and you should contact care to ensure that it's removed.

Another option: Or, just delete the whole account at https://account.jolla.com/ by yourself (not sure if even this fully clears the database, but it should do the trick) and create a new one via registration link. If you create a new account with another username/password, you need to update your account on the phone too: Settings > Accounts > Jolla > (pulley meny) Update sign-in credentials

EDIT, REMINDER for Jolla account:If you have changed your e-mail in your Jolla account profile (e.g. to: abc@whatever.com) and, given the information above, now decide to delete it, then before deleting it change your e-mail in your Jolla account back to the Ovi-account. Otherwise you wont be able to use your account abc@whatever.com to register for a new Jolla account. ALSO, a new account is used here at TJC, and you'll need start over with karma 1. (by comments by corneliusge)

But for Shop account, there's no workaround available:Account used on Jolla Shop is a different account, not related to the one used on the phone (even that it can have the same username and even the password). I have no idea where to even see your profile information for the Jolla Shop account, so please contact care for this account, and vote up here: https://together.jolla.com/question/44776/web-store-how-to-change-email-address/

Sometimes there are less user friendly solutions... Hope to see both accounts fully editable, and any old data removable by user, in the close future PLEASE

@simo Thank you for your information! I did delete my Jolla account and registered a new one. Coming back to together.jolla that makes me a new member: corneliusge (former corneliusg) with Karma 1. That's not a problem for me, but you might add it in your answer above as something to bear in mind for others, who must do something about their ovi-accounts.

I hesitate to accept your answer right now. I think it might be advisable to keep the question open, as long as further issues pop up, that add to the information you have given with your answer.

There is another reminder for those affected with the Ovi-problem. If you have changed your e-mail in your Jolla account profile (e.g. to: abc@whatever.com) and, given the information above, now decide to delete it, then before deleting it change your e-mail in your Jolla account back to the Ovi-account. Otherwise you wont be able to use your account abc@whatever.com to register for a new Jolla account.

@corneliusge Good points, I'll edit this answer with this reminder

@eric How about manually adding data (at least karma) from https://together.jolla.com/users/1123/corneliusg/ to https://together.jolla.com/users/7045/corneliusge/

simo ( 2015-02-16 14:49:51 +0300 )edit

@simo thank you! @eric The people at Jolla Support kindly offered a solution to the TJC-problem by reactivating my old Jolla account (corneliusg) and asking me to reaffirm the new e-mail for newsletters etc. That enables me to log in here again with my old name.

@corneliusg @corneliusge The issue why you received the 'Angry Birds Stella'-mail to your ovi-account is that we don't update our marketing email database everytime someone changes their email-address.

This means that there's a 3rd database on Mailchimp, updated manually by information on Jolla Shop (newsletter orders) database / Jolla Account User Register database? How often it's updated?

simo ( 2015-02-16 15:18:33 +0300 )edit

having worked for a very large worldwide ecommerce website, I can confirm that the newsletter database is updated weekly, sometimes even bi-weekly or monthly. I have never seen a daily newsletter email addresses database update.

edit: I mean, I don't know the Jolla situation, but is normal to have a separate database for emailing that is not refreshed daily
