I was about to put up another, hopefully useful guideline including using version numbers as tags, but looking at the current use, I think this deserves a small discussion in advance to reach the best outcome. Please add your opinions, based on the current use:

Version number tags are currently used in:

  • official release notes
  • questions related to only one version (outdated after the next release)
  • bug reports
  • totally wrong way (only few questions)

For the bug reports, some questions are tagged with the version number on which the user located the bug, some questions are later retagged with new version if the bug still remains, but most of them are not. Also, most of the users doesn't add the version number at all (tag bug has been used 2038 times, version number 437 times)

Quote from the current tagging guideline:

(version number) when you are referring to a certain software, it's a good practice to mention the version with the matching tag, like 1.0.2.5.

As an additional info, here's how many times the tags have been used originally (note: later retagging doesn't affect on these values, so there might be less actual questions left than what the listed values are)

This post is for preliminary discussion, and will be closed when the guideline is added. You can use both commenting (recommended) and answering (for longer opinions), or commenting any answers. Please post all answers as community wiki

First, thanks for posting this, don't know how long this has been the issue (I'm guessing a while) but since the last update (U11RC) there's been quite a lot redundant and easily to be found posts, so here's my thoughts on your points:

- official release notes

This has worked very well, not a surprise since the posts are from moderators/Jolla

- questions related to only one version

This either works or it doesn't, e.g. I don't see the point collecting all bugs, errors and requests to a single thread. It would be useful if this was a traditional forum with pinned posts, so that the latest release notes were on top and people would answer to it and discuss inside the answers about the issues raised. Sort of related to the official release notes also.

- bug reports

Some are just basically feature request and tagged wrong. But I think people either assume that if they write the app/function in the title it's enough and (again) since the latest RC people have assumed that everybody knows which version is discussed about.

In general, it could be good to have a pinned post to have sort of TOP10 rules and regulations, sort of a short version of the code of conduct here. I have to search every now and then what's the policy on this and that. I admit, I'm relatively new here (and in all honestly, I was going to answer shortly, not to rant) :)

a similar discussion is going on at the moment in this thread: https://together.jolla.com/question/17364/cleaning-up-together-please-join/?answer=82222#post-id-82222. That's a popular thread for tag related issues.

I was about to start retagging all version related tags to the form suggested by @r0kk3rz - 1.1.2-Yliaavanlampi. I guess I'll wait a few days to see where this thing evolves.

Yliaavanlampi is 1.1.2.15 or update 11 RC, so the right tag should be 1.1.2.15-Yliaavanlampi cause when the 1.1.2.x final arrives it will probably not be called the same lake anynore (just as with Uitukka -> Vaarainjarvi).

Thanks for the link, I'll check the discussion there as well before finalizing this upcoming guideline

Well, based on what @r0kk3rz said in the other thread, and what https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailfish_OS#Software_version says, the lake name is based on the first three numbers. Both 1.1.0.38 and 1.1.0.39 were called Uitukka, and 1.1.1.26 and 1.1.1.27 were called Vaarainjärvi. Same goes for Paarlampi and Tahkalampi as well. the fourth number seems to be a hotfix release number.

Do we need separate tags for such small differences. I say no, but It seems this matter is not solved yet and I'll wait a bit more.

new terminology came into effect with Yliaavanlampi, upgrade is the X.X.X.0 version change with new lake name, and update is a minor 0.0.0.X version release that might be a bugfix or a security release.

If we are to change all the tags, best to do it in line with this new terminology.

also, why drop final number from tag? because tags are useful for grouping things, and in the thread itself then the specific version can be mentioned.

Yliaavanlampi was also announced in this format Upgrade 1.1.2 / Yliaavanlampi, so that can be reflected in the tag 1.1.2-Yliaavanlampi
