There is currently no way to copy text to the clipboard unless the text is being edited.

The clipboard also fails in browser text fields, which have limited text editing.

Use this question to voice specific issues:

Where is the source code for the clipboard so we can try to locate the persistent problems with it? Please provide a link to the GUI code and the variables or memory area to which the clipboard GUI refers (apparently wrongly at least some of the time)

I am with you in this one; the clipboard should be system wide function to grab any text and to paste it to any text fiield in the UI, that accepts input. Also when pasting text, it shoudln't by default remove it from the clipboard.

I am with you on this - copy paste must be system wide function. Any text should be available for copying - in browser. mail, documents, sms, contacts. And also the copy interface itself should be really revised - copying text from email you answer is PITA - the text zooms in, moves to the side, jerks.

@jjaone Actually pasting text to any input is possible. Just now I discovered that when you swipe the clipboard icon on the keyboard then it will show you what is in the clipboard. Click on it and you will paste this text in the input. Kind of hard to discover, thought :-).

@Nux: thanks, swiping the icon actually shows the content of the clipboard and it can be pasted many times. That's good, but now we still need a way to copy read-only texts to clipboard fron anywehere in the UI

This is a known broken feature and has been so even after being reported many times, first in 2013 and in both versions of SFOS, 1 and 2, as experienced on the flagship phone.

Avoid the bug by using the terminal in the dev edition to make notes: write files with echo "text">"filename", then USB transfer the text file to a PC (if you have to use your SFOS device to make notes). Don't use the Notes app. Since it stores your text in a database and not as clear text, with its badly unmaintained bugs in critical corner of the GUI, that is the only roundabout inconvenience-as-a-solution I've been able to find.

This is exactly what I like about Jolla. Communication. Even if it's not available now, they tell you that they've listened, understood and will implement it in future. Thank you gals and guys!

Yes, agree.. this is very fruitful way of interacting with Jolla about device/OS features/issues, and fron user and developer perspective it is nice to see that Jolla is truly listening.. In regards to this copy-paste functionality it seems we can now be assured that it will geadually happen.. and the answer could be accepted as correct one :)

personally I'd vote for the browser to get this feature first! This is where I miss it the most now. Then copy-pasting from/to Android apps.

Priority: to implement system-wide copy-paste: 1. Browser, 2. Email, 3. other UI elements

I hope you will be able to do cut and paste to/from Android apps. Currently Keepassx from android seems to work fine, however it puts up notifications for use in cut and paste and these don't work. It would be great otherwise.

Possible way to implement this: Long hold on top of the content brings up two movable icons. Icons are moved to the start and the end of the text to be selected with one-finger-pull gesture. This system wide action would work inside edit boxes, documents, messages when reading, messages when writing, webpage links, webpage plain text etc.)

If the first gesture (hold) takes place on top of a link, a view like in 1.0.7.x browser opens, including options

  • Open link in new tab
  • Share
  • Copy link url to clipboard
  • Copy link text to clipboard
  • Select more text (returning to the page with movable icons)

After the selection is made:

  • one-finger tap to cancel (icons removed, no text selected)
  • two-finger tap to copy
  • three-finger-tap to cut (gesture is handled as copy if the content can't be cut)
  • four-finger tap to delete (clipboard content not changed) (this gesture would work only on editable text content)

Please implement the clipboard as a data store that remembers multiple previous items, not just the last one copied.

How can a 'System-Wide' feature be 'partially' released'??????? EIther it is system wide, or not. At the moment it is not system wide, so the label 'partially released' should be removed. Maybe replace it by 'work in progress' or something like that...

Any information on this ? it is SO FRUSTRATING when someone gives you a phone nb or an email adress in a fb conversation (from the browser, I don't use apps to access fb) and you have to switch between 2 screens to add it in your contacts.

Also I read something interesting on the internet, can't share it with friends because I have to re-type everything !!!

How are you guys living without this feature ? It feels so basic on any existing OS in the world... I see messages from 2013 in this discussion, kind if frightening :/ will this come at some point ?

Thank you in advance,

ps: another example; I am writing this in the subway, so I would like to copy my answer in case.my browser looses connection when posting; can't do that. I'll tell you I am not re-writing it if it does not get through :D

You are perfectly right, this is ridiculous. I'm guessing even inside Jolla no-one understands (or remembers) why this hasn't been taken care of long ago. There is hope for the next release. It is rumoured the Intex Aqua is coming out these days running a new SfOS update which might see this yawning abyss of a feature gap closed. I does feel though like Jolla has abandoned this platform even before Sf2.0. Maybe send mail to Jolla Care asking "how do I do this, I can't find the button" or something...

You can share the whole page or take a screen shot (install ScreenTapShot), longer writings is handy to be composed in Jolla's Notes app with autosave. Actually, you should have written a new question rather than posting your thoughts here as an answer. Or use comments.

Use an alternative browser. We fixed that in webcat and webpirate ages ago already. Sad this is still not adressed in the sailfish-browser though.

Also we fixed and proposed a fix to fix the clipboard stuck problem. Still no reaction on the send in patch by Jolla or the mer project. It is frustrating that Jolla is holding back SailfishOS by not fixing bugs that can be so easily fixed.

Thank you for this information about alternative browsers ! It should be in bold in the first post, life saver !

https://together.jolla.com/users/9631/nicop91/ That would make it look like a solution to the problem. We want it to be clear this is an issue and needs to be taken care of

In general the system-wide clipboard is working well as of SailfishOS 2.1.3.7; all aforementioned points are covered, AFAICS.

IMO, just one bug still persists:
After quite a while (some hours and not really deterministic) the Android clipboard and SailfishOS clipboard become disconnected, i.e. they both work well on their own but do not share the clipboard content with each other anymore.
Edit: Bug still exists in SailfishOS 2.2.0

Does anybody still have other issues with the system-wide clipboard?

I can confirm to have experienced the same issue on both Jolla C as well as OTH (same SFOS release),
