Hi, I recently connected to an hotel wifi network with jolla and I then enabled the WiFi tethering functionality to share the connection with my other devices.

Surprisingly, the tethering enabled the mobile data connection (3g or 4G) and the devices' requests were going out over 4G instead of the wifi connection.

I think makes sense to bridge the wifi hotspot interface with the current active internet connection (the one the phone would use to load a webpage or check email) and not always on the data interface. Many devices are nowadays capable of that, having that functionality on Jolla would reduce the number of tech gadgets required while travelling and also it would allow for safer internet usage: if for example a VPN is used on Jolla all devices share the same VPN tunnel, not requiring each device to open its own VPN connection.

other advantages of this solution:

  • the settings are the same: every device has to be configured only for the jolla wifi network, only jolla phone has to be configured on each network
  • jolla has a screen so it can be used for web based network logins, allowing to connect to internet devices with no screen or browser
  • no need to carry additional devices

I don't know if the hardware supports this feature. Usually WLAN adapters in Smartphones can either be clients or tethering hotspots, not both at the same time.

so you think that the wifi adapters have two wireless cards in them? For 35 euro shipped it seems a bit cheap.

EDIT: For example look at the Netgear PR2000-100EUS specs (from amazon reviews it also supports wifi web authentication), and it also has LAN ports.

You can forgot it, theres no way because the wifi chip doesn't support two connection at the time.

thanks. Do you mean that no mobile wifi chip can do that or that there are some chips on the market that can do it?

If the latter, can you please mention some phones on the market you're aware of that have this functionality?

And also we may request it for jolla 2 phone

@heubergen: Are you sure the CHIP has to support two connections? I think it's more a question of the underlaying driver, because the chip DOES support tethering for/to more than one connection. And if i'm right this shouldn't be to hard to implement... @Jolla / @iekku (as a moderator): Can you please confirm, which position is right. Many thanks!

you probably will get an official response contacting Jolla care. Please let us know their answer if you do. thank you

As @heubergen states the chip&driver used in Jolla1 is not able to act in client- and ap-mode at the same time.

@tigeli: What does "chip&driver" mean? Is the chip capability limited or is the driver limited? (I do understand that in the case the chip is limited the driver cant compensate this.)

I ask again because IF the chip has these WiFi router capabilities this could be a challenge for the community as well to program such a driver (or support programming).
