Please do not replace cover-actions pulls with buttons. At least not on the phone.

This will be huge usability issue for people with worker hands that do multitasking. I may be able to hit a small button with one app open. But with 5+ apps open how do you expect me to hit these tiny, tiny play/pause button on media player with my huge thumb? Now I have a big target of the whole cover to hit and 100% accuracy of pulling either left or right.

This change also forces me to be extra carefull when I want to just switch the app. I need to be carefull not to tap the action buttons.

This may be not obvious if you do all your testing on the tablet, but may prove serious issue when forced on phone users.

They should change something, do thing others. You will need to adjust you.

Please understand one thing: Jolla is about making money. The new why-should-you-buy-instead-of-de-facto-market-leader-android communicated is security, of your device and privacy.

UI differences, or concepts actually superior but difficult to understand or communicate, hamper the ease of switching over of said target audience (I didn't say: those 80% of the market that use android). So even if there is better concepts, revolutionary new look and feel, this won't sell Jollas to current android diciples.

I am sad about this change of course.

buttons? taps? this is just so "like"...

@Low And why we should care about that ? ;-) Aren't we supposed to be #unlike, not "consumable by average consumer" ?

@Low I understand your point, but I believe that this change will make it harder to use for the average customer. Currently, you can tap anywhere on the cover to open the app; in the new version, you will have to think twice before tapping it, so you don't trigger some other action. This will be very confusing for new users and I don't think it will get under user's skin.

It's like if you had an icon in the menu and only one half of the icon would launch an app and the second one would lock the phone - it would be the most confusing thing.

This is going to be really stupid if it reaches release. :( UI should remain consistent.

You'd need to actually care where to tap a cover to open it... this won't just be stupid this will get pretty annoying!

I hope it's the right place to ask.. what does HYC stands for?

Hear Your Customers maybe?

@c.la you could just click the tag... but Helsinki Yachting Club those who love the design team behind no buttons, peeking or any other nifty design idea supported by gestures instead of having everything always in-your-face, tidy pages, clean design.

Why not just have swiping from outside the screen to change homescreen-events-partnerspace? Then you can still swipe inside the screen to use cover actions without worrying about accidentally changing screen. Previous comments already explained many reasons why the button is a bad idea.

synthent ( 2015-03-03 18:12:15 +0300 )edit

One action is not enough. E.g. I like the cover actions Tweetian uses and wouldn't know which to discard. Furthermore some cover actions trigger something (e.g. refreshing) without opening the app.

@synthent: this is exactly what I was suggesting! Just like invoking pulleys does not conflict with app closing gesture (even though both are just downward swipes), switching the screens with swiping-from-outside won't conflict with cover gestures.

@synthent: I was thinking the exact same thing.

At the very least there should be a phone/UI settings option for "classic" style cover actions via swipe (up/down/side,whatever works). I mean, is there any reason not to have it? Options are always good.

That way you'd at least have the choice to not have to deal with precision-clicking the covers when opening apps just to avoid triggering the cover action. We'd still have the casualty of missing one cover swipe, but at least you wouldn't have to suffer from a more cumbersome "user-friendlified" UI.

I think this question should be closed and merged with the other one with more votes.

OT, but don't want to start a new thread for just asking... what does HYC mean?

Swipe gestures are clearly superior on the phone where it is possible to trigger them with your thumb. I guess it is slightly less useful on the tablet. I could live with "buttons" on the tablet, swiping might be kind of odd there.

In the new post on the Jolla Blog there is a statement on this:

Reduced set of Cover actions

Cover actions are handy. They become even handier if you select actions frequently used, if they really shorten a task flow and also make the cover easier to identify. After critically reviewing our current set we had to admit that some actions did not fulfill our targets anymore. Therefore we removed some, without removing the support for two cover actions altogether because they are convenient for e.g. the music playing use case.

In order to avoid accidentally activated actions while swiping between Home, Events and the new ‘Partner space’ we altered the interaction of the cover action, from horizontal swipe towards a tap interaction. We liked the gesture support, but when reflecting this against to the project objective then we had to let it go.

I'm tempted to think that cover swiping should remain and that the Events and Partner Space screen should be activated by edge swipes but... Edge swipes are for used to push a screen "out of the way", and I guess it doesn't make sense to push the home screen out of the way. :-/

This is really a huge fail - while I can kinda imaging using buttons for cover actions on the tablet due to bigger application covers, I can't really imagine using the tiny action buttons on the Jolla phone... They should at least keep the cover gestures when running on a phone for factor.

Why not use the lower 1/4 part of the cover as an swipe aera. Then we could have 4 cover swipe actions. Left, Right, Up and Down. This way it vil not affect any other swipe actions. https://blog.jolla.com/design-insights-sailfish-os/

Say you are in an meeting or a funeral and want to close the music App. For this I enter the App and swipe from above. With the change I am at risk to actually trigger the play button and instead of opening the App my phone will proudly sing "My life will go on, ..."

So If you must make it Buttons because Android User don't want to change for the better, please make it optional.

Because in-screen-swiping is assigned to Caroussel switching (and regarding also this post: https://together.jolla.com/question/107134/sailfish-20-fix-cover-actions/) I suggest an option to replace the new cover actions OPTIONALLY with this:

  • reopen an app: double tap
  • de-/activate an app: single tap (maybe shown via a coloured cover frame off/on, where 'on' holds for 3 or 5 sec.)
  • use cover actions: swipe cover AFTER app activation

So you can simply use the cover actions. It doesnt interfere with horizontal scrolling and it's intuitive cuz widely known from desktop guis.

Hello sailors, please DONT downvote a suggestion WITHOUT comment why you downvote. For me (at least) downvoting is a strong disagree. So please explain your opposition in short words. Thanks.

has its place here but for my part is not really intuitive... (i do not downvoted, because is not stupid or completely worse)

i believe horizontal scrolling does not need to be assigned to both edge-swiping and in-screen-swiping, thus i think this is nonesense.

its like as if someone decided that the backspace and delete buttons should actually do the same thing. ( im not sure which one i use more often but i am thankful they both exist and do what they do.)

@mlatu: you misinterpret my suggestion! I dont want to assign both actions to one functionality.

But in Sailfish 2.0 the normal in-screen-swiping is assigned to the switch between Caroussel sites. So you simply cant use this action for cover actions! Therefore I suggested another behaviour and this only optionally.

I hope this additional explanation makes my thoughts more clear.

M.Bln. ( 2015-10-23 22:39:31 +0300 )edit

I was talking about how it currently is: both gestures assigned to the same thing. or at least, when i edge-swipe or inscreen-swipe in home i can move to the event view either way.

about your suggestion: it adds a gesture to access cover-actions. so activate, then cover action. complicates things, so if they said either this or tap-cover-actions, i would vote for tap-cover-actions :-/

What about this: why not put new caroussel sites (events and partner space) next to the top menu? The change could be optional / configurable with a menu entry in settings. This way you can still use horizontal swipes for cover action in home site.

Compare here: http://reviewjolla.blogspot.de/2015/08/partner-space-on-jolla-phone-and-jolla.html You would have sites ordered in Form of a "T" instead of an cross.

What do you think sailors?

with the word "site" seems to be the same thing that i use with "panel".
what i suggest here
right?

@cemoi71: as far as I understand your suggestion you want to change the cover ACTION to a up/down move. Or alternatively change the way you switch between carousel sites.

That's not what I have had in mind. I wanted to change the place of the carousel sites regarding to each other. At the moment these sites are arranged in form of a cross - compare here http://reviewjolla.blogspot.de/2015/08/partner-space-on-jolla-phone-and-jolla.html. Imagine they would arranged in form of a "T" - three sites (Events, TopMenu, PartnerSpace) in a row on top and all other centered below.

All sites this way organised you don't need/can't use a horizontal movement to change from HomeSite to Events and have this movement "free"/remaining for cover actions.
