Please don't replace bottom-swipe action with launcher - events-view is where the action happens, that is what we need from everywhere. This is a multitasking OS, most apps we use will be minimized on home-screen anyway.

Also note that there is a grey indicator showing new users that there is something to swipe in (ugly). How about one of your tutorial overlays instead?

JollaPhone and Tablet SFOS2.0 just the same.

They should change something, do thing others. You will need to adjust you.

I dislike the concept of events view in SFOS 1.0. It's kinda useless. I like this harmattan swipe ui approach in SFOS 2.0 alot more

@Morpog this is about the gesture not the events-view design - and I hate the harmattan swipe UI, it is just not necessary to have 3 pages when you can achieve all of it with less gestures (you need to minimize an app then pull the page instead of just swipe-up). At least they did not put the launcher on one page...

I think that the issue is that Jolla basically neglected the even view - both directly (by not really improving it and adding new features to it) and indirectly (by not providing a robust API and documentation how to use it for third party developers. On the other hand I think it has a big potential - it has just not been realized yet. I'm for example using it very often thanks to the even view settings patch from @coderus.

So I think replacing it with launcher access is stupid and Jolla should rather concentrate on improving the even screen than making it less accessible.

The events view was supposed to be a view where you have a quick access to notifications regardless of the screen you're in. Having quick toggles for wi-fi, facebook, twitter, weather etc. is very handy. You can just peek for notifications, weather, etc. at-a-glance info or swipe up, toggle wi-fi, check twitter and return to the app with the same gesture. With this new update you would have to return to the home screen, swipe right, do your thing, swipe left and tap the application. This would make it inferior to android with its always accessible notifications view.

if jolla want use the bottom swipe to go to launcher. Maybe they can use the left swipe to go to notification page (evrywhere, even in application) and the right swipe to go on home screen. with this gesture the notification are accessible in one move.

Isn't this the exact same behaviour that can be seen in the tablet hands on videos? There is something like the event view if you swipe in from the left side.

blubdibub ( 2015-03-07 12:45:30 +0300 )edit

if i don't make a mistake, it's juste like this on the home screen. when you swipe in from the left on an application, you go on the home screen . but maybe in don't see the good video https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z3Tp770ups (2min05)

@blubdibub when you have an app open, swiping from left or right takes you to multitasking view and you have to swipe in from the left to see the events view. What @kayoux meant was to have the swipe from left to always take you to events view and swiping from right would take you to the multitasking view.

However the idea was to have the edge swipes both do the same action so you could use it with either left or right hand.

Toxip ( 2015-03-07 13:00:41 +0300 )edit

you both are probably right that the user has to be on the home screen to be able to swipe in the event view. I thought I saw the behaviour you wrote in your answer somewhere. But it seems like I was mistaken.

blubdibub ( 2015-03-07 14:05:43 +0300 )edit

I know I had a plugin to my N9 where I could configure what swipes went where. So swipe up went home/feed, right to the multitask view and left to the application launcher. I'd love something like that to be configurable for the Jolla as well.

What about the L-Swipe gesture like on the blackberry to get to the eventsview. But not swiping from the bottom to the right to get to it (as this breaks with the current ui concept).

The better concept would be: As you can see the notification icons on swipe to minimize from right or left it would be cool that if you would swipe down instead of letting go after you swiped from right or left edge to the center to automatically switch to the eventsview.
It should be possible to also indicate the eventsview showing up by start sliding to it as soon as the user starts swiping down (and the multitasking view is visible through the transparent app he swipes away).

This would work very good for thumb usage on smartphone and tablet and wouldn't be a direct copy of the BlackBerry concept.

I think you mean the same as me in this mockup? https://twitter.com/taaeem_/status/572799516077907970 If you meant this you can link it in your answer ;)

taaem ( 2015-03-15 14:44:00 +0300 )edit

Thanks. Yeah thats exactly what I was thinking about

leszek ( 2015-03-15 15:20:35 +0300 )edit

L-Swipe sounds like fingers cramping already

tortoisedoc ( 2015-10-28 09:35:01 +0300 )edit

@tortoisedoc: I get more cramp trying to reach left side of the screen with my right thumb than trying to mimic this gesture, so I personally like this gesture, even though I'd like to use it for other purposes.

Mohjive ( 2015-10-28 10:43:23 +0300 )edit

@Mohjive so at that point, an option to switch left for right to show events view should cut it ?

in the new jolla blog post is a statement about this:

You can tailor the experience according to your personal needs and wishes. The baseline is simple and easy already when you get hold of the UI for the first time. However when you advance you are able to unlock handy tricks, e.g. closing an app via a top edge swipe or direct access to Events from anywhere in the UI.

[IDEA] perhaps in a beta release they should test a options for swipe settings to change all aspects of the swipe gestures and there actions/outcomes much like "Hot Corners" in mac OSX are configurable. obviously there are few more scenarios that just Desktop/home screen and between phone and tablet probably introduces more. This way everyone can Swipe the way they want :)

With over 100 Votes it should be at least optional to bring it back. I really prefer the pre 2.0 way of using the phone. Global Eventsview is one of my favourites in SFOS (especially with patchmanager and the Settings on Eventsview)..

It is optional. Just enable Quick Events Access in Gestures and there you go, one global gesture to get to events view.

Did they "fix" the events view in v2? After you're done and swipe the events view away, are you returned to the application? If not, it's not nearly as fast or useful as it used to be in v1. :-/

drcouzelis ( 2015-10-28 05:06:54 +0300 )edit

@drcouzelis no they didn't the Events view still acts as an own window minimising the running app. I really hope that this feature will come in a future release as the current Events view is slightly better that in v1 (posting to social media would be nice to have back also, although I think used it once or twice a month - but there are people who used it a lot).

raketti ( 2015-10-28 07:36:10 +0300 )edit

so it is not working as it should. btw the setting to go to events view globally is unusable for most left handed.

NuklearFart ( 2015-10-29 13:56:58 +0300 )edit

@NuklearFart: I consider it unusable for me as a right handed person, as I have a hard time reaching the other edge without loosing grip on my phone.

On jollausers.com they say it's going to be kind of a merge of the side-swipe peek and events view:

Whenever you “peek” from within the open application you see all your running apps in multitasking-view as well as these new notifications icons at the very same place shown in the photo below. Therefore Sailfish OS 2.0 combines the former peek-up (notifications + events) and peek-to-side (multitasking-view) into one gesture. If you swipe the open application away, you switch into multitasking view and the left-sided notification icons disappear.

This sounds a bit better than expected but I still have to do more motions in the following case:

I have an application running. Now I want to take a peek to the events. I see a new message arrived and I want to directly open the messaging app.

In SailfishOS 1.0 I just need to do the full swipe from below and then tap the notification icon. In SailfishOS 2.0 it seems I have to complete the swipe from the side, then again swipe from the side to get to event view and then tap the notification icon. This means one more motion (and less fun/efficiency)

and the last things you write say it: its worse! btw i do not understand why they replace it with a peek. in settings peeks are to go foreward and backward

this merged peek-gesture is cool, because it simple enriches the UX, just like adding the date to peek-view would! but you are right, this does not solve the problem of having to swipe one more time when in an active app. I suggest to enhance the peek/minimize gesture. at the moment it is like this: you are in an app and want to minimize/ peek, you start peeking from the side (revealing the peek-view homescreen), if you continue moving your thumb to the middle of the screen it minimizes the app "temporary" and if you let go (in the middle of the screen, NOT just when your thumb reaches the oppoisite site!) it stays minimized on the home screen and peek-view disappears. with the new enhanced peek view with notifications shown on the left we could just extent the peek/minimizes gesture to the opposite side where the notification symbols are which would then open the full eventsview. this could then even be taken to the next level if the peek all the way from right to left (if right handed!) without lifting your finger would reveal icon notifications (on home scrren) when the finger is in the middle and when moving on to the left it would reveal/ peek into the enriched new events screen to show more info. And only if you would stop there you would be able to interact with the notifications, otherwise it would only be a richer view of the details of the notification (eg who send me an sms ect). i could imagine that it would feel great to just "peek through" all currently available infos just with one advanced gesture!

I never used the event view. Don't know why, theoretically the concept is fine, but pratically I just didn't use the event view. Thus for me this change would be ok. Of course I respect your point of view.

have you seen the new events-view in the demos? Weather, news, emails, calendar entries, settings-toggles and so on... now that it becomes useful it gets moved away...

chemist ( 2015-03-07 17:05:07 +0300 )edit

No I didn't see it, was speaking of the existing event view only.

chappi ( 2015-03-08 10:18:48 +0300 )edit

you can add control center to it. with this it becomes so much impact. btw, when u never use it you go to sms app to read it? well i open new messages always by using events view, especially when im surfing

NuklearFart ( 2015-03-10 00:31:37 +0300 )edit

Now if you want to just switch wifi on or use your flashlight, you have to unlock the phone to event, open the pulley, and you can trigger action .. One step more, one useless step.

malibu1106 ( 2015-11-03 15:11:28 +0300 )edit

@malibu1106 one step that is not even caused by this question's topic. It is caused by the settings favourites repositioning and has nothing to do with this topic.
