I think a good way of implementing both the Lock function and the app closing function via gestures would be if both the lock and the close commands had their own space like the ambience ones. The first swipe-down field can be the "app-close" command for instance, the second one the "device lock" command, and you activate them by moving the finger from the top to the perticular field and releasing it on the proposed field. It certainly would mean that you have to internalise when you need to lift your finger off the screen in order to access certain commands, but i think you can get used to these moves after some time.
To prohibit these basic top-down functions from mixing up with the not-that-often-used ambience-changer you maybe can change the pulldown-triggering in a way, so that the different ambiences open up after a certain point on the screen by dragging the finger down. Or maybevia a fast flick down the whole screen.
But then again i don't know if this method would be valued as too unsteady and difficult for Newcomers to learn.. Anyway i would love to see the swipe-down functions of sailfish 1.x in Sailfish 2.0! :)
I really like the new way of doing it. Only thing I dislike is sacrificing app closing by swiping down for it
Morpog ( 2015-03-02 19:18:25 +0300 )editWe need a separate close gesture different from swipe from top. It was a mistake in the first place to have one gesture do two things.
ApB ( 2015-03-02 19:23:24 +0300 )edit@ApB two things, we started off with "close" only (I consider locking the phone also a "close" gesture) - that was set to "minimize" apps then and lock the phone separating in two different actions. @Morpog yeah I like the ambience-switcher being moved there and the "silence" too but one thing still bothers, if I flick it down will my phone lock or do I need to tap something? If I do need to tap something total fail!
chemist ( 2015-03-02 19:33:39 +0300 )editAt least i hope we can configure it in order to have it only lock the screen. If we need to swipe and tap to lock is a step back.
ApB ( 2015-03-02 20:11:04 +0300 )editAdded to top-post.
chemist ( 2015-03-02 20:14:23 +0300 )editI think it should be configurable but both seem nice:
BTW, I'm always using the power button to "lock" the screen myself. :)
MartinK ( 2015-03-02 20:26:36 +0300 )editWhat does "hyc" stand for?
Upp15 ( 2015-03-02 20:36:50 +0300 )editI would prefer a two finger swipe down for ambiances as soon as 1 finger pull down for closing apps is enabled.
Morpog ( 2015-03-02 20:40:42 +0300 )edit@Morpog two finger can work on the tablet since it is a two hand device but are a no go for the phone which should remain a one hand device.
As for the ambiances i would prefer something like a "change ambiance" option in the events view.
ApB ( 2015-03-02 20:45:09 +0300 )editLocking the screen should be a quick and simple action.
I care little for being able to easily and quickly change ambiances, but I care a lot for being able to lock the phone quickly and put it away if, for example, thugs are approaching.
Perhaps in the SFOS 2.0 settings there should be an option called 'Legacy gestures', where the interface is interacted with with gestures as they are presently?
oenone ( 2015-03-02 21:06:27 +0300 )edit@Upp15 there is a tag you could click but well,

Looks like i might just have to stay with Sailfish 1.x unless they let me have the things from the current UI in 2,0 New gestures seem like a huge pain to use.
It is more natural to swipe up/down. I don't like that lock screen to home will be a side way gesture.
Whippler ( 2015-03-05 02:28:29 +0300 )editThe close gesture is easily one of the two gestures that I use most, second only to the minimise/go to homescreen gesture. It is an important part of what made me really like the UI from the first time I saw it, and I use it all the time. Please don't take it away.
Kevin ( 2015-03-05 16:25:03 +0300 )editI think the best way is offer the ability to define each action for each swipe in settings. With this solution, everybody is happy ;)
In addition, could you add a feature to use more than one finger in swipe (use multipoint screen capability)? This can be usefull for new swipe and action.

pan tau ( 2015-03-07 16:41:02 +0300 )editWell I do love the new 2.0 UI but I do share the same concern about the swipe down gesture. I do believe Jolla will hear our feedback and find a good compromise but those worried I would say relax.
We got a great community and since the moment of update there is going to be a community made patch to bring back out loved swipe down gesture to close the apps.
Mariusmssj ( 2015-03-08 11:29:17 +0300 )editThere are enough loyal Jolla supporters who think this is a backward step (and no longer 'unlike') that Jolla surely must reconsider? More obvious solution is surely two-finger swipes and gestures (particularly useful for the web browser, but generally opens up a whole new world of possibilities). If this actually makes it into sfos2, it'll be a two-finger gesture from me before I jump ship.
Wilty ( 2015-03-08 23:21:18 +0300 )edit@chemist - thanks for your reply as to "what does HYC mean?", but the acronym alone does not explain very much for others wanting to know what it means and why it is used.
@Upp15 - see this post for a better understanding of HYC and its meaning; HYC stands for Helsinki Yachting Club.

Spam Hunter ( 2015-03-09 22:37:50 +0300 )editSwiping down to close just feels natural, since we started with it on the N9. SO much other brands copied it - even Windows 8 (very badly, though). As someone said, ambience thing is great, but please do not replace this gesture for it.
luisjoly ( 2015-03-13 16:02:35 +0300 )editif jolla do not let down to close,I think it lose his soul.
