Please don't remove top-swipe action close from in app, this should stay at least optional. The new ambience-pull-down is nice but please do not replace the close gesture with it, if it has to be there, please find a way to have both instead of sacrificing gestures for all new UI features.

And locking phone should stay a gesture too, not pull-down+tap.

I really like the new way of doing it. Only thing I dislike is sacrificing app closing by swiping down for it

We need a separate close gesture different from swipe from top. It was a mistake in the first place to have one gesture do two things.

@ApB two things, we started off with "close" only (I consider locking the phone also a "close" gesture) - that was set to "minimize" apps then and lock the phone separating in two different actions. @Morpog yeah I like the ambience-switcher being moved there and the "silence" too but one thing still bothers, if I flick it down will my phone lock or do I need to tap something? If I do need to tap something total fail!

At least i hope we can configure it in order to have it only lock the screen. If we need to swipe and tap to lock is a step back.

Suggestion: Make it work similarly like in current "old" SailfishOS: Currently swiping down closes a running ap or locks the phone when no app is running (when you're on homescreen).
In SailfishOS 2.0, according to what I've seen in hands-on videos, swiping from top opens the ambience menu only when swiping completely down, swiping only a little locks the screen. So what about keeping the new menu but changing the "lock" behaviour to how it currently works? Or at least make the "lock" behaviour configurable.

It should work the same way a pulley menu does, so we could use it with just a swipe, no tap.

I never said I don't want the menu, from all videos I have watched so far a flick from the top does open that pull-down menu and did not close or lock. Maybe pulling beyond lock icon should open the pull-down and everything above should lock the phone...

@chemist yeah, this is what I thought I saw in one of the hands-on videos (can't remeber which one). And my idea is that "pulling beyond lock/close icon" closes the running app or locks the screen when on homescreen.

That is not what I have seen in 3-4 hands-on videos. Only thing that could be is that you have to hit the "lock"... That is exactly what I do not want. I want to close an app or lock the phone while I am not really looking at it anymore, with a short flick from the top, just like it is now, no need to really look what you are doing. Guess I will have to use "buttons" then... thought we are past that idea!

@chemist exactly, when I want to close an app I don't want to make a slow precision job, just a thoughtless quick action. And there's nothing more fitting than an (unprecise) gesture for this like a swipe from above

so they want to introduce a change which makes using the phone more complicated?

let's assume I want to close an app and shut down the display: at the moment this is just a double swipe from above. This is super efficient and fun! And it just feels intuitive: close the curtain for the app, close the curtain for the device (display).

but according to the Sailfish 2.0 demo the only way to close an app there is to go to the running apps view, do the long press and then tap the x icons. As the name says: it's long. It's cumbersome. It's bulky. It's slow. It's errorprone (you better aim well at those X'es!). It's essentially no fun! I barely use this way to close apps ever on my Jolla phone.

sorry, this sounds so unneccessary...

Suggestion: lock the device with a swipe from left or right in home screen!

Workflow: Using an app -- first swipe brings you back to home -- second swipe locks device.

You already can test it with the current firmware: use the browser in landscape mode and swipe twice from the left - perfect :-)

I have neer been comfortable with the swipe from the top to lock the device, because the procedure differs between landscape and portrait mode. Apart from that the top is too far away for secure one hand usage.

I'd like it if the swipes were easily customizable: Just record a swipe you want (as has been possible in desktop web browser for ages) and use it for a specific action. This way everybody could use the gestures they are most comfortable with.

As one of the very first Jolla supporter since july 2012 and (also made the trip from France to Helsinki to buy the Jolla Phone at the Jolla Launch Event on Novenber, 27, 2013, also supported and ordered Jolla Tablet on Indiegogo), I am very sad and desapointed to see such changes. One of my favorite feature on Sailfish OS over other OSs is the ability to close app and lock device seamlessly by a gesture from the top edge without looikg at the screen. The point of Sailfish OS was to use gestures instead of taps on tiny buttons because it is really easier to perform a gest when holding the phone with one hand and moving, and now with Sailfish OS 2.0 we will get back and have to look at the screen and tap on a tiny button exactly like other OSs...If Jolla continues such direction with Sailfish OS (I mean not respecting the very first philosophy behind Sailfish OS UI design), I am afraid I will be forced to consider leaving the Jolla Boat.

So please do not replace your first fans and supporters' loved features. No one changes Ambiences every few minutes, especially when we can schedule Ambiance/Profile changes automatically, but everyone has to close apps and lock the device frequently (every few minutes). So if you don't leave the current state, plase make it optional (add an option in settings for persons who want to sail with the current FANTASTIC and LOVED "close app/lock device" feature).

Solutions are sometimes so simple :

Ambiances/Profiles could be added to the new Settings Section in Event View (so it would be olso only one swipe away from Home view). And keep the top wsipe to close apps and lock device as it is now.

Hei, you have written down exactly my feelings... disappointment, sadness. I know the world is constantly changing. But if I wanted an 'open-ish' Android, I could have bought an OPO. Now it looks like winds of change are blowing our boat towards not so desirable waters... Thousands of Jollas sold already in the last 15-16 months, world-wide. I have mine pre-ordered. I put my faith in it even before I saw what it would be, if anything at all. I got used to the way it is working. I started to love it. The demos of SFOS2 make me think of another 'droid with a special launcher... And that I definitely do not want on my First One. By the way, the latest Android has a lot of pulls and swipes already... Please, turn the boat before it is too late. LVPVS out.

@Christian_Emlek the title is probably a bit misleading as the ambience pull-down is actually pretty nice, what bothers me is that in the demos it shows to pull in completely always. I guess they will do it like on pulley menu, first bit will trigger actions and then you can pull it out completely. I will update the question and the title so it is easier to get that actually both is possible.

Same here. Got my phone end of november 2013 and knew fully that i buy a beta state OS. Since today i never regretted my purchasing decision. Preordered the tablet while the sailors where even on stage @SLUSH and eagerly await May. That said, i do like the overall changes in Sailfish 2,0 so far (especial that the ambiences moved from swipe let/right and gets replaced by the new notification / settingsd center. BUT: the missing of closing single apps is an utterly bad decision. As me ntioned above i love the single swipe to close app or closethe phone. Please be #unlike and bring that back. It is a feature not a bug :-)

I´m totally agree in the point of "one swipe to close apps and lock the phone". Sure, I can also use powerbutton to lock, but it is hardware and hardware can break in case of heavy using (like at my old htc), a gesture never.

I´m also with you, that switching ambiences needs a quick access, because I hope that ambiences in future are not only nice designs but profiles where I can store a couple of personal settings like tones and feedback, loudness, gps and connectivity, as discussed in this post https://together.jolla.com/question/1319/additional-options-for-ambience/

My idea would be to use an L like swipe gesture to close applications. See also this thread if you like the idea: https://together.jolla.com/question/84392/hyc-dont-sacrifice-events-view-global-gesture/?answer=85675#post-id-85675

So you swipe from the side (either left or right) to make the main application transparent and to see the multitasking view. Instead of letting go you start swiping up (L or inverted L form) and (maybe there could be also an indicator showing that swiping up would close the active window (Like the big X on SFOS 1) it closes the app if you let go.

This concept should work perfectly for thumbnail usage on the phone and the tablet.

why should that be complicated? I like this idea since there are clearly too few gestures atm to satisfy all users. I mean for the multitasking guys the new UI makes perfectly sense, but for the guys that still rather close the apps they dont use its a problem.

closing an app is one of the most often used actions at all. So the gesture associated to it should be the easiest way possible and very forgiving for being unprecise. A swipe from above is both. Doing an L or tapping a lock icon is neither

I think a good way of implementing both the Lock function and the app closing function via gestures would be if both the lock and the close commands had their own space like the ambience ones. The first swipe-down field can be the "app-close" command for instance, the second one the "device lock" command, and you activate them by moving the finger from the top to the perticular field and releasing it on the proposed field. It certainly would mean that you have to internalise when you need to lift your finger off the screen in order to access certain commands, but i think you can get used to these moves after some time.

To prohibit these basic top-down functions from mixing up with the not-that-often-used ambience-changer you maybe can change the pulldown-triggering in a way, so that the different ambiences open up after a certain point on the screen by dragging the finger down. Or maybevia a fast flick down the whole screen.

But then again i don't know if this method would be valued as too unsteady and difficult for Newcomers to learn.. Anyway i would love to see the swipe-down functions of sailfish 1.x in Sailfish 2.0! :)

I remember us users arguing for a very long time that swipe down to close should be an option on the N9, and Nokia being initially reluctant to do so. And then they agreed to put it in, and everyone agreed what a great idea it really was, and should have been there from the beginning. SO when the Jolla had it from the start I was happy. Now I'm less happy.

It is unfortunate that, for me, Jolla seem to be moving away from their original aspirations, I guess it makes sense for them as a business - but if they are going to start looking more like the mainstream I might as well look to my next phone being something that is mainstream

i think this is too complicated. why not ambiences instead of partner space. this would solve those problems. i prefer the n8/android pull down menu over ambience switcher, but this is exact the global eventsview with the settings inside, so what i think is to stick to both, global events by swipe up, close/ lock by swipe down. this improoves usage (time) so much

As i understand, this is still a possibillity. maybe the pulley menu implemention was just not ready for MWC... So to still have the convenient and simply close swipe it would only be necessary to make the close item the last one to pull out/down. It would be activated if you draw further or just flick. All problems of this Thread would be solved imho. Same operation as we are used to, plus more options if you do not pull all the way down.

Suggestion: Let ambiences be "apps". That way the ambiences can be located together with the apps/floders on app drawer, so no need for swipe from top to change ambience. Instead swipe from top can be used for closing app/locking device.

Seems like Jolla wants to create OS like any other. But I remember, Sailfish had to be UNLIKE ! No one has such easy and fun way to close app! And it MUST stay as it is! I don't need to change ambience with open app on the screen. When app is open - swipe down should close the app, on any other situation swipe down can be like it is now in OS 2.0. In other words we will have possibility to close app with one swipe and lock the device with the second (but with a little shorter swipe).

I use to use swipe-down-to-close since october 2011 (Nokia N9) up to now, and if it will disappear from Jolla it will be unacceptable for me.

Another suggestion:

2 finger swipe gesture --> Change Ambience 1 finger swipe gesture --> Close app

Beside this solution I also find the L gesture good (mentioned above). Swipe from (left/right) and while holding you can decide to just "go out of the app" or by further swiping down "to close the app". This reminds me very strong about the old "Peek/Glance" gestures in Blackberry OS10.
