Launcher: automatically categorise apps

I'm not enormously fond of Jolla's current app launcher: a grid of icons (some very distinctive, some not, and folders with rather undistinctive icons). I also don't like manually organising apps. Yes, I know this is what IOS and Android and everyone else does; it doesn't mean that it's good!

What I'd like:

  1. a favourites section for a small number of apps I select
  2. a self-organising categorised tree (or tag) view of all apps
  3. a search field

This could even fit into one screen on the Jolla phone: two rows of favourites, one row of top-level categories (opening sub-views), and a keyboard for search.

Take a look at some of the free-desktop launchers (especially KDE's, also GNOME's, but not Unity's): they have all this functionality.

I think, this could be having more categories in Harbor store itself and group based on that?

Something like that. It might be worth comparing freedesktop's Desktop Entry and Menu specifications.

@anandrkris yes, see my question and the reference to the N900 app 'catorise': https://together.jolla.com/question/47686/option-sort-apps-into-folders-according-to-how-they-are-categorized-in-jollastore/

Jaakko Roppola (Senior Designer at Jolla) recently blogged about this very topic and came up with some similar ideas.

Whilst this is Jaakko's own blog and does not necessarily mean that such things will make it into SailfishOS, its clear that he agrees with your sentiments that having a big grid of uncategorised icons is bad design and will no doubt be promoting better ideas internally.
