Is it necessary to have differences in ui between phone and tablet?

When using a smartphone or a tablet there normally are differences in handling. For me it would make sense to take this into account.
A phone normally is used in portrait mode, held in one hand and often operated with the thumb of this hand. Tablets are mostly used in landscape mode, held in one hand and operated with the fingers of the other hand.
So the flow of gestures go in different directions. The new carousel function for example, which is shown on the tablet moving horizontally, might in my opinion better go vertical in the phone.
The question is: will it make sense (and be possible) to make a difference in some functions dependent of the device type? And which functions may be affected here?

My intention is, to discuss weather it makes basically sense or not to implement a functionality to have different behaviors on different device types. Without making two different SFOS species.
silmoc ( 2015-03-14 12:08:24 +0300 )editi get your point, but still it would be nice to have only one question for one topic and your question could just be an answer/ comment/ opinion on the other one. if you want to differentiate, you could rename yours pointing more directly to what your suggesting (or making it a [suggestion]), because otherwise the headline doesn't make clear what's the difference between the two and this makes it harder for others to vote and find the topic they search
