Today I wanted to download a big ogg opus file in the stock browser. When I clicked on it, the browser tried to play the file but failed (This may be another bug), but it did not offer a possibility to download the file instead. I tried another approach, pressed on the link and hold my finger down for some time and got the selection to:

  • Open the link in a new tab (this would then start playback, this time working)
  • Share
  • Copy the link to the clipboard

(all three options translated from German)

I saw no way to force the browser to download the file. Is there no possibility to do so, or did I miss something? If you want to reproduce that case, the file I tried to download is located on this site: http://www.alternativlos.org/30/ (the "als ogg opus"-Link).

This is a known issue with media files. Browser should download the files it cannot playback. For images browser has an option to force download by long tapping on top of image and selection "Save to gallery". Adding same option to other types of media files is in our backlog but has not been a high priority item so far.

This is not limited to files/media the device can't use. In miss this option as well to download files such as MP3s and play or view them later off-line.

@minnist Yes, I meant that download option would be expanded to those files too.

I would like to have a "download"-Option without downloading the file first(image, music, video, whatever) by long tapping on the link and then have an option to do so.

SInce the browser is open source I added an issue for the developers:

https://github.com/sailfishos/sailfish-browser/issues/100

Notice I am personally not involved in the browser and don't know how much work etc... but...
