[bug] Certain Android app can only be opened by workaround

Hi there!
I installed Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection, ported to Android by Chris Boyle, using this apk. I played once or twice with it, then it stopped working. When trying to open it I just see the spinning circle for some time and then it disappears. Reinstalling did not help. I left it there, untouched.
After some time I installed the Android store F-Droid. To my surprise, Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection was listed as installed. (The installed version is newer than the one available in F-Droid.) I realized the small play icon ► in F-Droid when viewing the app details. I touched it and - voila - it works.
I could confirm this using another Jolla phone (from a friend of mine).
Bottom line is: I can not start the app from launcher but it can be started from within F-Droid.
Any ideas on what's causing this?
