GPG for email (and other stuff?)
Hi,
It would be pretty nice to have gpg (gnu version of pgp) support on the jolla mail client. Security is vital these days..
We have moved to a new Sailfish OS Forum. Please start new discussions there.

While K9-Mail in conjunction with OpenKeychain is working very nicely nowadays, a native solution is surely much more preferable.
yeoldegrove has taken a major step in this direction by compiling the GnuPG framework ("gpg suite") in its recent version(s) for SailfishOS and releasing it 2017-11-04 on OpenRepos.

I'm currently using mutt with gssapi, krb5, cyrus-sasl and libidn which works great if you're fine with terminal applications. Gnupg/mime encryption is supported as well. The only thing is that you have to compile the stuff by yourself (no rpms available yet except for libidn). No big deal on SailfishOS, though.
That's a good solution for an advanced user, indeed. Just not fitted for the big public.
maddler ( 2014-06-04 09:05:47 +0200 )Well, still better than the Android solutions which are non-free and unstable like hell. When I was at school mutt was the standard email program for every user (also non-techies) and I consider it as quite comfortable to use (after one learned the shortcuts).
inte ( 2014-06-04 10:26:00 +0200 )just add commands to terminal shortcuts so you do not need to remember them ;)
Bysmyyr ( 2014-06-04 16:23:38 +0200 )Using mutt isn't so hard to learn, but setting up compile environment, running make, etc is. @inte, make it a package on OpenRepos!
00prometheus ( 2014-06-04 19:35:10 +0200 )Mutt is for "online" work, it is not suitable for any "offline" tasks with an IMAP server. I used mutt many years, and yes, it is the best solution under the condition you have very stable internet connection. Mutt is worthless on mobile, especially without HW keyboard.
ortylp ( 2014-06-04 19:49:58 +0200 )Regarding PGP for K9: Does anyone here has tried openkeychain? Looks quite promising to me...
Yes, I'm using it occasionally, works ok. But I'd prefer a native solution...

pavi ( 2015-01-08 21:37:20 +0200 )Sorry upfront if i go to much off-topic as this is not an answere. BUT the guy behind GnuPG /GPG (Werner Koch) seems to need public help as there was a donation call today. Just wanted to make you all aware of the situation. Well, implementing GPG into Sailfish is onething we all want, but what if there is no maintained GPG in a whole anymore? http://www.propublica.org/article/the-worlds-email-encryption-software-relies-on-one-guy-who-is-going-broke
[Edit:] thanks to the propublica article and hacker news coverage and probably other publications, there was a lot of donation money coming in. Very well deserved. Glad this happened!
mosen ( 2015-02-06 12:25:51 +0200 )Yes I even heard that he was asking donations for the project. This is very important for the future of email encryption and other hand Dear Dear Sailfish OS a graphical support in the phone would really bring all those GNU/Linux users to buy a Jolla phone instead of android.
pavi ( 2015-02-06 21:49:47 +0200 )"Update, Feb. 5, 2015, 8:10 p.m.: After this article appeared, Werner Koch informed us that last week he was awarded a one-time grant of $60,000 from Linux Foundation's Core Infrastructure Initiative. Werner told us he only received permission to disclose it after our article published. Meanwhile, since our story was posted, donations flooded Werner's website donation page and he reached his funding goal of $137,000. In addition, Facebook and the online payment processor Stripe each pledged to donate $50,000 a year to Koch’s project."
