Jolla Camera app records videos in ´mp4v/h.263´ format (mp4 container, H263 format)

This format is quite outdated, and not supported by html5 browsers or common media players on for example TV's or BD-devices. This often prevents showing Jolla recorded videos on bigger screens, as converting or player supporting h.263 is needed to view them.

I'd like to see Jolla Camera app updated to record videos in at least x264 (default on mp4 nowadays) or even newer format

EDIT: Still an issue, August 9th 2015

Video from Jolla Mediainfo

Container is Apple QuickTime.. Videorecording eat about 70% of one CPU.

Without any problem i convert video to constant 25 FPS with passthru aac sound in HandBrake to both MKV & Apple MP4.

This is just a guess, but I think that the poor audio quality on recorded video is due to active noise cancellation... At least it sounds to me like it. One could test it by completely blocking the secondary microphone...

thanks for the guess @Direc, I'll definitely try to test with your idea.

@eric or other moderators - should I break this into separate "bug questions", checking for duplicates for each at the same time? I find that in this form the question isn't working too good.

While waiting for a fix, there's a workaround:

  • Recorded videos can be uploaded into YouTube, which handle the converting automagically. However, there's clear quality loss in the process.
  • Recorded videos ´mp4v, h.263´ can be converted into html5 supported format, e.g. ´mp4a, h.264´ with 3rd party programs. There are several free video converting programs available (VLC, Any Video Converter, ...)
    • ps. when converting a landscape video, turn your Jolla to the left when recording (see a rotation bug)
