"utterly busy with partner negotiations especially in Asia"

I don't know what kind of partnership they are looking into, but I sometimes wonder what it would be like if a successful HW manufacturer would license Sailfish and produce a high-end hardware.

Vote up the answer with the manufacturer you like best and add comments to explain why. This is not meant all too serious. But still, the result of the poll can be an indication of what the community would love to see in the future.

I don't want to be picky, but I guess they are talking Sailfish 2.0 "partner space" partners, here...

@StaticNoiseLog please keep your personal requirements out of the answers - teasing is ok though ;)

@chemist: OK! Let's add reasons why we like those companies in the comments to the "answers".

Maybe one should actually discuss in another thread if it would make sense for Jolla to license Sailfish to other companies. Google and Microsoft do it. Apple does not. Both business models seem to work. I think it might be good if Jolla got some additional manpower to help with Sailfish IF they choose their partner(s) wisely.

GIGASET

... very solid, up-to-date HW, central-European player & warranty - too small ( not to say insignificant ) for becoming another "Droidmaker". Devices maybe more available than OnePlus devices.

Current device based on Snapdragon 810 / Adreno 430, HDscreen@401ppi & 3GB RAM. Comes o.a. with buttonless design, surface sound conduction, quickcharge, USB-C, UV sensor, heart-rate sensor, fingerprint sensor, pedometer dual SIM, 128GB microSD support, up to 4Ah battery, IR RX/TX, 20Mpix/8Mpix cameras.

They ( used to ? ) produce tablets as well :

Latest version:

[ The QV1030 is said to suffer from poor USB-B-jack soldering - do we know that from the N900 ;) ? So maybe jolla QC has to carefully check HW implementations of potential licensors. ]

Interesting I didn even know they made smart phones too. I only know them for their DECT products. I guess they spun out of Siemens?

Pim ( 2016-01-02 17:20:59 +0300 )edit

@Pim .... yes, Siemens spin-off. They released a tablet too.

a bad idea imho. Jolla needs some real partnerships to get new customers because its current niche is to small. Jolla is too geeky for most people but not open enough for real "free software" geeks and it cant go more open until they grow bigger. Until now all Partnerships only resulted in Android apps that cant be the goal any good stuff is provided by the community (exept the phone itself of course)

Blackberry

The venerable folks at Blackberry deserve to be mentioned here.

Quite unrealistic, of course, because Blackberry has a very similiar solution to Sailfish (Unix with Android emulator). A shame that they are not more open.

Thanks for bringing up Vsenn, had not heard of them before. Modular Hardware, Guaranteed Updates, Maximum Security, Customizable Looks (from their website. This sounds like good goals.

Vsenn is off the table. They gave up and licensed their technology to an unnamed company.

Mainly for the ultimate expertise in device design and build quality. Not sure how much of that would still be with Nokia in 2016.

Okw ( 2015-04-28 22:20:40 +0300 )edit

@Ghost don't know what it is with you amoled guys, those things are crap displays, energy efficient, still crap - if something then for the swivel-keyboards, trans-reflective displays, build quality!

@chemist energy efficient and meke it better for glance screen which is the best effective way of seeing your notifications and time..

Ghost ( 2015-04-28 23:04:03 +0300 )edit

you care more about views that make 1% of your usage than about your actual usage - my Jolla without amoled but with Glance-Screen (just not persistent - still like how it works) lasts longer than my N9 with phone usage and is still way better than most androids I know with smartphone usage!
