Hello,

This is not a question but a PSA, kind of. Facebook chat is still working if you don't update to 1.1.4.

Why, Jolla? Why did you remove a feature that wasn't broken in the fear of it getting obsolete, before knowing if or when this will be the case? I now can't update my phone without losing this functionality.

Thanks a lot... not.

FB has announced that the old API will stop working at the end April, Jolla did the right thing in this case. If the old FB api is still working is FB responsibility but there is no guarantee that will run in future.

Just if you are not yet assured, Jolla is not the only one dropping facebook chat support. https://mail.gnome.org/archives/ftp-release-list/2015-March/msg00113.html

Facebook has stated that apps using API v1.0 will stop working within few weeks after 30th of April. Also the fact that Facebook Chat was going to be deprecated was known already one year ago, nevertheless Facebook has not provided any alternative ways of providing the Chat-functionality (and we can't force them to).

Essentially this - Facebook announced the deprecation well in advance. Whether they shut it down exactly at the announced time or not, at this point the feature is essentially in limbo. It wouldn't look very good to have a feature in the latest software release that may or may not stop working at some unspecified point in the future.

Over the course of many years, Facebook has announced their intent to shut down the XMPP chat interface multiple times. I don't see this becoming a truth in the next months or years. As of today, Facebook chat is still working.

Looks like they did it. At least in my case I didn't update either but a week ago or so it stopped working anyways (it would ask me to update the fb account and log in again every time I tried to connect to the chat)
