Which blog post?

you would expect there to be an announcement if there was a release date that they could, well, announce :P

Sailfish OS being sold on a non-Jolla device is pretty big news, even if it is another minuscule player like Yota

Made in Russia? If firmware and drivers are FOSS I'd consider it, any less and I find it hard to believe that KGB isn't trying to get their own NSA equivalent Zombie-iPhone-Spy-Horde

The damn thing is bigger than the jolla. Therefor i don't care.

The OP question is based on a blog based on the article in the Russian newspaper Kommersant. But the most interesting thing in the article imo is not about Yota Phone.

My translation:

„Sailfish OS had been developed since 2012 by Finnish company Jolla. Now it belongs to Hong Kong Jolla Holdings, owned by Jolla and some Chinese and Russian companies.”

Well, Kommersant is a pro-government paper with not the best reputation. So some of the info can be just out of their fantasies. But some maybe not.

Thanks for your translation. I'm the author of the blog post in question, and I didn't pick the lines you mention into my post as I found those maybe not too reliable as well. For what I picked to my post, I tried to get a reliable background via several other posts: https://news.yandex.ru/yandsearch?cl4url=www.thg.ru%2Ftechnews%2F20150527_144806.html&lr=213&rpt=story&redircnt=1432825642.1 If you find any mistakes in my translated parts, I'm happy to correct.

Any help with this? "Глава Минкомсвязи отметил, что страны БРИКС должны объединить усилия для создания конкурентоспособной экосистемы ПО на базе продуктов с открытым кодом. Jolla Holdings, разрабатывающая ОС Sailfish - уже международная компания, среди ее акционеров есть представители Китая и России."

simo ( 2015-05-30 12:57:10 +0300 )edit

No, he's not ) Fortunately )

This passage is mostly a political statement announcing that „BRICS countries should unite their efforts to create a competitive software eco system based on open source products. And Jolla Holdings developing SFOS is an international company with shareholders from China and Russia.”

@simo Looked again through your blog, the translation is correct.

Btw, thanks for your blog )

My main concerns are that I don't want any political forces to take part in SFOS development - not Russian, nor Chinese, nor American. But the situation is that it looks nearly impossible nowadays. (((

The message "Yota drops android" is a hoax:

http://the-digital-reader.com/2015/07/04/no-the-yotaphone-isnt-switching-from-android-to-jolla/

Maybe Sailfish will be used as optional firmware, but nothing more.

Nope, not even close to anything like SOON™ (Translate: No there is no further and especially no official info available and chances are that this stays that way for a while.)

But is it more like LATER™ than PERHAPS™?

Im not going to accept your answer, sir, sorry, no.

tortoisedoc ( 2015-05-29 22:22:57 +0300 )edit

At the current stage...PERHAPS™ there will be no official Yota phone - that may change LATER™

chemist ( 2015-05-29 22:34:10 +0300 )edit

I'd say ill go with WGAFAJW(tm) ;)

I'm not going to try to answer, or support/deny this answer either, but as "General Director of Yota Devices Vladislav Martynov did not comment on the opinion of the minister." and we have no info from Jolla either, I think this is a valid question without an answer yet.

The head of Rostec (Russian state organ with a 25% stake in YotaDevices, and more in Yota parent) has openly admitted that there's an official backdoor in YotaPhones for the FSB to spy on users. He goes on to say that it's a legal requirement .. yet implicitly admits that iPhones have no such feature (ranting about them being the choice of terrorists), or at least one that's available to them - a situation that's likely to be the case with most Android phones too.

There's no way they remove this backdoor for export markets.

To those interested in security, I think you can rule out any of the Sailfish Russia (and probably Sailfish generally) stuff.

Sailfish adoption in Russia is a play to improve surveillance, and that alone. Jolla know this too.

There is no official admission. See http://www.phonearena.com/news/Surprise-surprise-Russian-YotaPhone-comes-with-a-backdoor-for-the-KGB-to-spy-on-you_id69930 , update #2. They denied. I believe think it isn't true. At least for now.

remains to buy direcly from Jolla since american companies are forced by law to give the NSA access to all available data. (BTW if you compare this article to others concerning the NSA you will find that this is much more judgmental.. a good example for decent propaganda)

There is also a poll going on.

The news was also found to be nothing but a rumor. And in the state of Soon. TM

raketti ( 2015-07-06 15:40:35 +0300 )edit

Yes @raketti, my wording interesting included the rumor aspect. So, read on the link...

JoHe ( 2015-07-06 17:02:56 +0300 )edit

Ah, didn't caught that. :) But yeah, I've read a bunch of stories about the news. Too bad though, YotaPhone could have been an interesting concept with SFOS. On the other hand (although the Tablet sort of miserably failed in China) there might be an alternative to YotaPhone. :P
