Phone misbehaves if I've been sweating too much

When I have the Jolla in my trouser pocket, and then do physical activities that cause me to sweat a lot, weird things seem to happen. I usually have the touchscreen towards my body (to prevent screen damage if I bump into things, though it probably also increases the risk of sweat touching the display).

Two things seem to frequently happen when I get too sweaty: 1) the phone somehow unlocking and random actions being taken, which may include pocket dialing (the proximity sensor seems to not prevent this, for some reason) 2) app UIs don't respond and update properly (Lipstick works and updates fine, but apps do not), making the phone effectively unusable until I reboot (how this occurring is even possible baffles me)

Is there some bug with the proximity sensor that causes it to not realize that it's in my pocket and shouldn't unlock?

You can test the proximity sensor with the CSD tool.

If it fails contact care.

The sensor works fine under normal conditions. If I cover the sensor, doubletap does not activate the phone. However, I notice that the power button activates the phone even if the proximity sensor is covered.

@ovekaaven: Try not to sweat too much ;) No seriously most likely the sweat gets the screen damp, capacitive touchscreens don't like that. And secondly it might leave some film over the proximity sensor which might mess up its readings. The second thing you see where lipstick works but the apps not has been seen before, sometimes it seems an invisble keyboard comes and grabs the input. I think a fix for that issue is in one of the upcoming releases.

So, I take it I should order a protective case or something, then... (though I still think it's suspicious that the power button works even if the proximity sensor is covered.)

I have similar problem.

For long time I used lastu cover that covered the screen and I had no problems of the phone waking up in my pocket. I wanted to feel different and switched normal to backcover... and then the problems came. The phone wakes up and depending on it's mood it heats up in my pocket, opens random applications, makes calls and sends sms's to people. It has yet to call 112 in lockup mode but it has tried...

This might be because of sweating (+35C outside) or just because the double tap waking up feature. The proximity sensor will allow you to have the double tap disabled, but as you move the pressures of the phone changes in the pocket opening the sensor and allowing double tap awakening.

There are two options that I can think of:

  1. You can try to activate screen lock for your phone. Then you can put immediate locking instead of 5-10minutes. Or just double press the power button to lock the phone immediately.

  2. Disable the double tap awakening and use power button for awakening. This is how you do it in command line:

devel-su

"Your Password"

pkcon update

pkcon install mce-tools

mcetool --set-doubletap-wakeup= never|always|proximity

With "never" the phone doesn't awake for double tapping. With "always" the proximity censor is disabled and double tapping awakes the phone always. The power consumption of the screen will be higher than normal with always on. With "proximity" (default) it works like now.
