I often run into the situation that it is required to shake a smartphone to make sure display orientation is the way I want it to (maps, gallery, websites...). If a smartphone is placed on a table, it's usually required to pick it up and shake it to change orientation.

I tried to figure out what the best solution would be. First, I was thinking about a sensor that's checking the position of the eyes. But then I thought it would be easier to let the front cam do the work.

So maybe this is something that could be implemented in SailfishOS, be it with a patch or as a built-in feature of the OS. I just don't think any of the accelerometers do their job well in so many everyday situations.

It is not an issue of accelerometers but the interpretation there of, using 4 different portrait only apps and the next landscape capable app still opens in landscape and it changed initially to landscape only because that is the way I put my phone down on a table...

How to solve it then?

Flipping the phone once is enough, no need to shake though... but it is annoying yes... how about portrait only apps resetting it to portrait when used? That would help (at least me) alot. It was even more annoying with apps having content portrait only and free aspect one page later...

I often have situations when flipping once doesn't do it. For example in the gallery or when using maps. Especially when using maps I have to repeatedly rotate the phone. But it's probably just me not getting along with how it works ;)

@Anna Did you know that you can inhibit automatic display rotation by tap-holding on the screen while rotating the device? Maybe you did this unintentionally sometimes. So try to keep your fingers away from the screen when rotating it. ;) I never had to shake or double flip my phone to get it right.
