I called "Bob" once on his cell phone, then again on his home landline.

This means I have two entries for "Bob" in my call log, however they are both shown as just "Bob" - there's nothing to distinguish between them, apart from the time I made the calls.

The call log is a quick way to call someone back, but it's pretty useless unless you know which phone you're calling!

If the call log listed entries as "Bob (mobile)" and "Bob (home)" the call log would be a lot more useful and wouldn't mean I've just accidentally re-dialed Bob on his landline when I meant to call him on his mobile!

Just to confirm why it was not real answer?

Should possible alternative solutions be always added as comments instead of answers?

I still think it was good answer to your question's last paragraph

Yes, because comments further the discussion by raising other related problems, allowing you to give your opinion, and to propose workarounds or suggest alternative solutions.

Your "answer" was not directly addressing the question/problem, it was only discussing an alternative and related issue, hence it was a comment rather than an answer.

Answers should ideally be definitive, based on fact, and directly addressing the question that has been asked. Posting opinion as an Answer makes it appear as though a question has a solution when too often it's just someone saying what they think should happen.

@Kari, @MilhouseShould possible alternative solutions be always added as comments instead of answers? I have to say no. :) Solutions to the question should be posted as an answer. Views and other related issues should be posted as comments.

@Millhouse - Thanks for the additional clarification how to "behave" on this community.

I agree with you partially but I'll give +1 to @Mohjive's comment as that was what I tried to achieve with my "answer"

In fact it is about the same as the exiting answer pointed out by @hzb

Kari ( 2014-01-03 18:44:35 +0300 )edit

Your answer was nothing like that posted by @hzb, which is in fact definitive and relevant as it points out (correctly) that this question is in fact a duplicate. However even @hzb should have posted as a comment rather than an answer because if anyone disagreed with his assertion that this was a duplicate (always possible) then we would still end up with an unrelated "answer" being assigned to this question which is something we want to avoid if answers are to have any relevance.

There's nothing to stop you re-posting your original answer as a comment, either in this question or the original, however what you wrote originally is still not and never was an answer to the question being asked.

Good spot, I searched (tags and regular search) for "call" and "log" but that one didn't come up... closing this as a duplicate, will also retag the original (if I can).
