Dear Developers,

We are happy to introduce Flattr in Jolla Store and Jolla Harbour!

Some of you have already noticed the implementation of Flattr in our development roadmap. The Jolla Store backend and client support have been released in the latest OS update Aaslakkajärvi, and we have just deployed Jolla Harbour support for Flattr earlier today.

In case you aren't familiar with Flattr, it is a micro donation service where consumers can donate money to content creators, e.g. app developers. With the Flattr icon prominently displayed in the description of your app, your users and fans can easily reach your Flattr profile and show their support through donations.

To enable this, you need to first register for a Flattr account. After that, please add your Flattr username and link to your app website to harbour application submission page, and submit the changes to QA.

Setting up the Flattr account is free. For each donation, Flattr keeps 10% and you receive 90%. Jolla does not take any of the funds.

For more details, please refer to the FAQ in Jolla Harbour, as well as the Flattr FAQ.

We hope you will find this a useful and flexible way to support your Sailfish OS development work. Thank you for your continued contributions to the Sailfish OS platform and community!

On behalf of Jolla Store/Harbour team, Carol.

Addendum:

Kind reminder from Harbour QA team:

If you are only adding your flattr user name, there's no need to upload binary. All incoming binaries will be tested and it will slow down approvals a lot. Same applies to all information changes, no need to upload binary. Thank you :)

Nice, thanks. :) For developers that don't want to use Flattr, what about a generic "Donate" button, with harbour-configurable target URL?

As a user - do I need to set up my flattr account somewhere on my Jolla phone (or with my Jolla account) for this to work?

@ossi1967 As a user, you don't need to connect your Flattr account to your Jolla account. We will have a blog post next week to give more details for users to support their favorite apps/developers. Happy midsummer!

Superb! Are all the developers of earlier apps aware of this already? Hope they update their apps with the donation button too!

Thanks to the Finnish law, it is probably illegal for any developer living in Finland to ask for donations this way (or any other way).

What is the point of that law anyway, almost sounds as stupid as the US teacher who banned linux with her pupils and confiscated free floppies distributed by one of the pupils, just out of pure ignorance. She thought Linux just was some illegal pirate thing.

This is like saying, "Software should not be funded in a free and open manor, only evil big-a$$ corporations should be allowed to take money for software". Finland is a nice country in most ways, but this is just the worst dumb-a$$ crap-law I've heard about.

I also question that law in this context, because it leads in with the text "without anything in return" and this is not the case here, the software is indeed something in return. I can completely understand if this is something law that wants to prevent beggars and such (which indeed is a big problem), but software funding is something completely different.

@Larswad: "Purpose of this Act is to enable the organization of the financing of non-profit activities and prevent dishonest activity in connection with money collections."

@avhakola: Thanks, but what does that really mean in plain English? What is an example of dishonest activity this would prevent? Money laundering?

And the first reason, can one enable non-profit activities by forbidding software funding? Its sounds to me like there is contradiction between the two.

I am not quite sure about Finnnish law, but in Sweden we have laws about organisations that seek donations. They need to register and have a limit on how much overhead they may cut out of the donations. Basically it is a law to stop scammers. Flattr on the other hand seems more like what a street musician would do, and that is certainly legal, at least in Sweden.

P.S. For those who wonder why I am rambling on about Swedish law when the question was regarding Finnish law: The two countries have very similar legislation, in fact they used to be a single country.

@simo, @00prometheus: So judging by your explanations/views it seems as though it all comes down to interpretation and precedence in courts. Obviously Finland then interprets this quite differently.

I would guess they need to try this again in Finland, for software of this sort it becomes sorta ridiculous.

Publishing software is giving something in return, so IMO no need to read that law at all

Exactly!
