Hi, I'm not sure if this needs an update in the phone app or if it can be done with a patch, but I think it would be useful to get possible contacts offered in a list when I type a number.

For Example: I open the phone app to type a number that I have written on paper but no name connected to it. Now when I type the first numbers the phone already can start filtering my contacts based on the numbers. So I can see if the contact is already known in my phone.

Of course the feature should be able to avoid country restrictions (simply ignore things like +34, +1, +49, +7 etc.) and compare only the actual phone number with the saved ones - to avoid seeing a number like +49-12345 (German number international format) as a different number then 0-12345 (national format).

I think actual Samsung Phones (or is it Android in that case?) already support this, and I think I saw it also in Samsung Wave (Bada) Phones.

What do you think?

Why not, it works in the SMS app. :)

+1 I'd suggest suggesting (sorry:)) numbers on a matching substring basis, that is if I enter "1473" something like +7(999)231-47-35 should also be suggested if found in phonebook.

@Garrikus: Yes, any part of the number should be used for comparison. Can happen that you want to call people from the same company that just have different 4 last numbers like an extension, then this would help incredibly.

fantastic idea, would be nice to live filter based on all data fields, like job title, or last name, or City etc

Sorry to reopen this thread but this functionality was NOT released in a software update. I just tried again on 2.0.5.6 and it never suggests an existing contact neither in national nor in international format.

I'd love to see phone app facelift too. opening dialpad from pulley is a bit clumsy solution. Why call history has no search box like this?

image description

In such concept tap in the searchbox brings dialpad up. Once part of the number is typed, list shows search result from merged contacts call/messages history. Results order could be customisable in settings, with last call/message time being default.

image description

Also there's so much vertical space wasted, pls shrink dialpad and padding around items on th list. It would be perfect if dialpad, searchbox and 5-6 numbers/contacts would fit in one screen.

The search should also trigger the basic keyboard, so one could search by name instead of number.

[edit looking closer at fastdial app it does search in a bit weird way so plz disregard.] Wouldn't that duplicate what we have in people app? Here i'm thinking about case of havng the (part of the) number and not contact name.

@Xeno_PL, true, but it could be easily implemented as a switch layout button, if the list of dialled/answered calls is long, then you could just type a few letters and get the contact you want. But I agree, that it would double a bit with the people app. However, I usually open the phone app instead of the people (mostly because I usually call the same numbers/people), so it wouldn't be a bad idea to have the search on both. Just my two cents... :)

or integration of third party even Android VOIP apps and slave in the dialer!
