I think it would be helpful to have an interface in the settings to choose which app is default for certain things.

Setting the standard browser, mail client or connection certain of protocols with an app would be really helpful. I would, for example, prefer opening Youtube links with the YTPlayer app rather than the browser.

A page in the settings that supports this would be really good. Maybe an app could be also used instead but I think it should be better provided by the OS.

I know that we can use .desktop files to change the standard behaviour but I think its better to "collect" the .desktop files in a GUI to avoid wrong entries and to better integrate non-tech users.

How can you always find so fast the other thread? I tried searching with default in the text-field and didn't see this other thread.

One of my many needless skills (I am also searching for duplicates I remember so it seems unfair but the people handling duplicates will always have a head start in finding the original question - all questions repeat themselves and every time I alter its title a bit to adapt to the searches people failed with - also 'old' stuff like that was quiet obvious to be a duplicate - searching here isn't that hard, you just need to recognize that your standard view newest-top do not give desired results always)
