Starting with 1.1.7.24, Whatsapp will only show phone numbers rather than the matching names in People. This happens even if the new switch enabling Android apps to access contact data is active. EDIT: This appears to be true for all Android apps.

restart dalvik , start whatsapp and wait a some time...

Done this, did not work. Rebooted the phone, did not work. Now it's about 16 hours later and still doesn't work.

Something like this? Click!!!

What helped here was -backup Whatsapp data only (using titanium backup) -remove whatsapp -restart aliendalvik -start Exdialer and let it load all contacts -restart aliendalvik -reinstall whatsapp but dont start it -restore Whatsapp data with Titanium backup (data only) -start WhatsApp and let it load all contacts again

No, in this case contacts are shown by number even if there is a name associated with that number. This behaviour started right after the 1.1.7 update.

As I wrote: "Whatsapp only shows phonenumbers instead of names" :)

this does work. but you need to enable hidden contacts in whatsapp.

go to settings in whatsapp, select contacts, make sure the checkbox for 'show all contacts' is selected. after this your contacts will appear.

They are already enabled. As I said, the problem appeared with 1.1.7.24.

try disabling and enabling again

Just tried, no effect. It appears not to be a Whatsapp problem.
