Sailfish OS 2.0 coming to a NEW (?) smartphone next to me in EUROPE? [answered]

Dear Sailors: refering to https://blog.jolla.com/next-pipeline-sailfish-os-2-0/ "coming soon to a Smartphone next to you" is a great promise, highly appreciated. To which Smartphone next to me (I am in Europe) does it come? Do you mean my trusted Jolla 1? Or is something a little bit more up-to-date in the pipeline for EUROPE?

Since the tablet seems to be almost on the way, I (and I suppose it is not only me) am curious about a next Smartphone for Europe. Taking into account the announcement to treat the OS business and the device business in separate entities, this questions appears to be even more pertinent.

Sail on!

Spinning out the hardware business only makes sense if there is hardware in development. The tablet will still be shipped by current Jolla company. After the summer, the plans for the hardware company will be revealed, and it seems likely they'll have something coming up in the latter part of the year.

Didn't that rumour already get debunked by both Jolla and Yota that there isn't a device on the making at the moment? My guess is that they begin to

a) sell the Intex devices through Jolla Shop or

b) announce another partner to deliver devices to Europe/Russia.

@AkiBerlin The Jolla 1 is now well over 18 months old, and really there should be a replacement coming up. My guess is that they have already planned another device for late 2015. Maybe even starting a new Indiegogo campaign to get more international attention. The hardware business plan means that something's going on and also that they've had some serious discussions with the investors (possibly OS-licencee candidates).

The Jolla 1 hardware wasn't very impressive when it was announced (May 2013), let alone when it launched (Dec 2013). Now in mid 2015 it's just really old and showing its limitations (speed and insufficient RAM). They must have made plans for an update...

Did you read the blog? It says the following:

*When can I get it?

Sailfish OS 2.0 will be available in our next software update through our normal release process. In a few weeks our early access customers will get a first try for it, and then quickly after, every Sailfish OS user will get to experience the new smooth user interface and all other new stuff it has in store.*

I think that pretty much answers your question, it will come to your device. For any future devices to be sold in Europe, there hasn't been an official announcement. But I think after the pone launches in India, we will soon know about the Euripean market as the Jolla Shop has been said to be renewed.

I read the blog and I understand that Sailfish OS 2.0 is coming to my Jolla 1 anyway. IMHO, however, the title of the blog suggests something more than just a software update . This is confirmed by the blog's first paragraph that tlaks about a new device - for India.

Therefore I thought it is about time to ask for more detailed device plans for Europe hoping that Jolla will keep the pace of providing news they lately showed.

I think the question is when a new phone (2GB, HQ+ display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800+) with SailfishOS will be available in Europe ;-)

I think we'll know about new devices in Europe after the division or the launch of the Intex phones. But I agree that some info about the European launch is needed. I was really disappointed that neither Jolla nor Intex revealed a device in the MWC. So, again, we have to wait. The first phone is told to hit markets in India in October, so lets hope we'll see a phone hitting the EU market at the same time.

i wouldnt expect the intex phones to be sold outside of india, i dont think their current lot is and why would sailfish change that?

End of this year is way too soon for the new Jolla Mobile company to produce anything, too soon after the tablet anyway.

I'm guessing at leat the first devices will be vendor/operator linked phones with the partner space/screen. And those most definately won't be sold outside India (no bonus). And I totally agree that the HW part of Jolla won't be launching anything soon, hell, the company hasn't even been put up yet! :D

Speculation: But as Intex is a device manufacturer, why can't they manufacture devices with a blank SFOS inside to be sold outside India? They'd probably get the same profits form the devices (might loose some with the partner screen link missing).

The current Jolla phone is almost 20 months old, within a period of 6-9 months from now, most of Jolla's customers in Europe will have a 2-year old phone. Future OS s/w updates will reveal more h/w limitations e.g. 1GB RAM, display, and the "replaceable" batteries will start failing. It will be difficult to see Jolla how to keep their european customer base, without releasing a new phone in Europe soon.

They won't leave European customers just out cold, I don't know what they have planned, but they have planned something, a snip from a Forbes article Jolla Introduces New Reference Designs And Software To Fight Android:

Jolla’s first handset is now approaching two years on the market, and fans of Jolla outside of India will be looking at Intex and wondering how to get their hands on an updated handset. I’ve no doubt it will be possible, but the brand partnerships do tie content to a regional market, and the strategy is to build up a platform within each country.

But perhaps they shouldn’t be too hasty, Saarnio has one last comment. ”We might have something else coming up for Jolla fans.”

I just hope that this "something else coming up" is not a watch(or some other useless gimmick). ;)

Yeah, me too. Since they announced they have a partner to deliver devices with SFOS I've been waiting some small bits of info about new phones in the EU or about the web shop.
