One more SFOS-1 is going to be released (1.1.9)? [answered]

It's sorta a common knowledge here on TJC that next SFOS update is going to be a global one to version 2.0. But according to this answer (https://together.jolla.com/question/93089/browser-leaks-memory-when-scrolling-on-httpkulttuurisalonkifi/?answer=103864#post-id-103864) there's going to be another 1... version (1.1.9).

This makes me wonder, when v.2.0 is going to be out, as it's mid August, and we still don't have a stable 1.1.7 version. And normal gap before next update never was shorter then a month, and then there would be an early access version(s)... All this makes me think we'll see v2.0 not before the end of October.

Or did I got something wrong?

SFOS1.0 and SFOS2.0 are marketing terms, SFOS1.0 in terms of 1.0.x, wasn't as stable as you'd expect a 1.0 release to be and most core system changes of what you call v2.0 are already in 1.1.x. Naturally the next version would be 1.1.8 that seems to be skipped. So yes, probably version'ing will not get 2.x.x that soon but what did those numbers tell us before? 0.9.x was the same UI design as any 1.x.x already.

Well, I don't bother much about version name, mostly thinking about tablet, when it's going to be finally ready, as it was announced to come with SFOS 2 installed. And talking about 1.1.9 makes me think 2.0 is not in a ready-to-release state yet. Yes, I've read the blog, and I know hardware is finally ok and now Jolla is sending tablets to developers. Just want to know how much long we have to wait.

@rburkhanov I think you misunderstood the whole 2.0 thing, Jolla does not develop a 2.0 on the side and then swap over from 1.x, it is 1.x gets developed to become 2.0. So all iterations of 1.x are steps towards 2.x and shipping with SFOS2.0 means it will be shipped with the UI2.0 and not that it will actually be 2.x version wise.

@chemist No, I don't think like that. That would be a really strange idea to develop SFOS 2 as something totally new, not based on what we already have. Of corse SFOS, like any other OS, is developing step by step, not just jumping from side to side at somone's will. As I've said in comment to simo's answer below, and here in my first comment to your answer, the only thing I do care is not OS version numbering, but when and in what state we gonna get the tablet.

We already have much of "SailfishOS 2.0" in our phones with the latest upgrades (the split keyboard, landscape support on many "base" applications) and the next release will complete that transition.

Uitukka (Update 09) got a version bump (1.0 -> 1.1) because of the upgrade to Qt 5.2, which was an huge thing (and it may have also broke compatibility with some apps).

Albeit confusing at first, I think that it makes sense to not (internally) bump to 2.0 as the next upgrade is just a normal one, it "only" brings a new UI.

But the next release is in fact going to be "SailfishOS 2.0". This commit sealed the deal for me: https://github.com/sailfishos/sailfish-browser/commit/2e1d96362410cd5b29387a28ca70b51f88999c13 (It permanently removed the Refresh cover action from the browser, which previously was still shown in 1.x).

Latest post on developer mailing list confirms, yes, there will be 1.1.9, and after that 1.2 (Sailfish OS 2) https://lists.sailfishos.org/pipermail/devel/2015-August/006395.html

As it's put there, 1.2.0.x will "complete" the transition to "Sailfish 2.0" but that process is already started since quite some time...

Looking at the updated development roadmap they have planned a redesign for some other applications, and my guess is that we'll see them in 1.2.0.x, while the new home UI will appear in 1.1.9.

Time will tell :)

@simo Thanks for sharing! Now things are getting even more unclear )))

Imho there are two possibillities:

1) we have to wait even more untill tablet release (adding an average 1 month for every next planned version (1.1.9, 1.2.x, 2.0) — gives us november at best), and

2) tablet will be released soon to early supporters from the igg with some of the 1.x.x versions and later by the end of the year with SFOS 2.0 for everybody else.

@simo I don't read it that way. Sailfish 2.0 can be anything that Jolla says is Sailfish 2.0. They could have called 1.1.7 "Sailfish 2.0" if they wanted. The one aspect that people will immediatly notice (and that therefore will be the sign of "2.0") is the new layout of home screen, app drawer, events view etc.

If this is already implemented in 1.1.9, then it would make sense to call 1.1.9 "Sailfish 2.0", no matter what other features/changes are waiting to be released in 1.2.x... And the way I read the mail you linked to and the development roadmap, I expect 1.1.9 to be just that: The new UI for both tablet and phone, thus "2.0".

@ossi1967 Yes, and now they are calling 1.2 the SFOS2. Earlier, they said the next release after 1.1.7 will be SFOS2. My best guess: 1.1.9 will include most of SFOS2 features already, but it's not finalized enough to be called SFOS2 after all - maybe we might call it "SFOS2 Beta", for example, while the next release will deliver it complete

@simo SailfishOS changes with every update, there won't be a fully "finalized" one. We got a new browser UI in 1.1.2.x, but SailfishOS was still marketed as 1.0... From a marketing standpoint it makes sense to draw a line somewhere, and it makes sense (IMHO) to call SailfishOS 2.0 the one that gets the new UI.
