Big audio collections are really hard to browse at the moment; one idea to improve the situation is to make the People list browser work for the Author (or the album, or the song name) as well.
A Genre filter would be useful as well, but that feature has already been requested. And it should not be too uncommon to have lots of songs/albums in a single genre anyway.

I had this idea some time ago, and incorporated it into my own music player (SirenSong on OpenRepos.net, also available on MerOBS)
Its not as fully featured as jolla-media or other players, and so it may not suit your use case, but it is an example of this kind of menu for music libraries in action.
I also put some effort into pulling out the People-Alphabet menu out of the app itself, as it is fairly ingrained. information available here

however, I think the default media application should be able to handle reasonably big collections of music (My music is on an external card, I have ~100 albums with 200 artists, for a total of ~1700 songs).
Actually I think the alphabetic bucket list should be made into a component available to third party developers as well.
