several reasons:

1. speed of doing a lock, it takes double the time
2. you need to look at the screen to lock
3. the ambiences are in the way and accidental ambience change is bound to happen

a button press might work, but...

the use case where it's lying on the table next to you on your meeting, or it's charging and you want to take a quick peek to charging status or see messages and quickly relock, is taking too long.

NOTE: also the time to unlock is too long as well...
