Pull down to close / lock screen

I find that the Pull Down from the top of the screen action is inconsistent. In a running application this action, closes the application. In a home screen, the action locks the screen. I like the systematics of both of these commands, they make sense to me. Yet they conflict as you can not lock the screen using this gesture while using a running application.

The solution I suggest is that these two commands are merged into one. In the home screen view nothing changes swipe down from the top locks the screen. In the running application a little change. As you swipe down from the top the screen fades to black and if you release the gesture there the screen is locked as it would be if you had hit the power button on the side. On the other hand when you continue passed the fade to black the home screen fades into view as it does now and the fades into view, the application closes.

I tend to close applications inadvertently trying to lock the device with a pull-from-top gesture while in an app. So yes, it is kind of inconsistent.

In short: Pull-from-top-of-screen would be a global gesture to lock the device, and pull-from-side-and-then-down would close the app. I think it's a good idea.

I think if the pull down from the top gesture were only allowed one action then, it would have to be to lock the screen. You can always close the application from the multi-tasking screen.

Would you explain, pull-from-side-and-then-down? Do you touching a point on the top edge moving to a corner and down? Or from point on the side and down? Where up and down is indicated by direction of flow of text as would be printed on the screen.

It is explained in the suggestion I linked above. Not my idea, I just liked it.
