It should not be acceptable to suggest shell workarounds! The longer these workarounds exist the problems will not get addressed. Even if you know how to do it with shell, say "No it is a bug and does not work, hopefully will get addressed in next update". Then downvote anybody who suggests shell workaround!

It should not be acceptable to suggest third party programs for industry standard functionality. It increase attack surface, waste resources and problems will not get addressed! If somebody suggest third party program downvote him!

Let's do this! Thanks!

EDIT: In hindsight this idea may be too abrasive and disruptive. I don't think is wholly invalid, some fix needed. Remember to upvote the bugs at least! Maybe refrain from upvoting hax solutions( so do not downvote either. leave them be.)? I fix this for my jollailija thread if possible.

So I should downvote somebody who gives a useful and working solution to my problem? Do you think this is an adequate way of saying "Thank you" in a civilized environment? Solutions that require me to do some CLI typing are perfectly valid as long as they work. Most of them even have the added value of explaining some of the details of how SailfishOS works, which means I can do even more than I originally asked for.

yes downvote, not tolerating anymore bad solutions. we are now raising the bar!

@alloj working solutions are good solutions. Non-working solutions are bad solutions. No solutions are worst. I really don't know what you're trying to achieve... except scaring away people who are willing to help.

I want improve Jolla more! I want give example: years ago a friend of mine -an iphone user- wanted to check out some app with Nokia phone. He started app, waited few seconds then gave the phone back to me and said "It doesn't work". I took phone, of course app worked but for his standards it didn't- too slow, laggy. I thought him unreasonable then, but not anymore. I think we should look where industry is honestly and not be enablers for bad solutions. That way we get faster improvement! Let's do this!

So you assume that Jolla folks won't address a problem because somenone gave a third party based solution ? You really have a high esteem for them !

Right... try a little bit to moderate... (not so easy because of missed time...)

FIRST, Why there are people who propose "shell workarounds " for some problem issues, and why are they good?

Please answer an give your point of view, and weighting your words, that's not a stupid question.

Maybe you think something that is obvious for you, but could not be that trivial for other one.

Right, for me if someone has a problem on an issue, that is a no go not to help him. Every help are welcome, but all risk and difficulties should be given and discussed.
How could it be done in different way, if there is no current viable solution.
I find it great if jolla as reduced team, and can't go on front for all request, that a 3th part dev, help to minimize the issue or complete solve it. He make the job for jolla for "nothing". He isn't obliged to do it.
Then a would give a "platine card" (better than gold )

People propose "shell workarounds" because they want to help. These workarounds are good, because they can help the ones who need help.

Simple as that.

I agree with OP in that ideally using CLI shouldn't be necessary to use the OS to its full potential. But Sailfish is work in progress, developed with very limited resources, long way from being mature, and in the meantime command line operations really can help lots of users use their devices more fully. I just don't see any harm in posting these "temporary solutions", and downvoting them won't do any good to anybody for sure.

I'm sure people at Jolla know better than to not fix some problem because a workaround exists.

First things first... Saifish is amazingly flexible as an os, and because of that these "shell workarounds" are made possible for not just fix temporary problems that in time will be addressed, but also to either add missing required features or to enable removed previous features the user found very useful. Having said that, it is then obvious these are more than just "shell workarounds" and do more than just fix temporary problems. They truly give a platform for the full customization of the OS. Now I do not even understand why someone would have an issue with that, but still as we are entitled to our opinions, it is still silly to think the existence of these "shell workarounds" will make Jolla complacent and not look into fixes for the issues identified here in the community. How many bug fixes are there in every major software update? Can we really be so demanding as to even refuse help when we have to wait a bit longer to get the proper help? Plus we can never have a unified best version of the os anyway as what works for you will definitely not be acceptable to me

@ssahla@DameCENO good points for you both...
I could understand for people who are not skilled on cli, that is really odd to have a look on it to fix a problem.
personally i have a small experience on this typ of praxis. And currently with my situation i don't want to take so much time for it. But if it could fix an important function for me, then its ok. That's still a solution. Furthermore, i find quite cool if a system have the possibility to use the shell workaround. Same as the remark above, it propose with it more flexibility. That is for a long time that i never do something with android and at this time it was not possible. And i can't represent myself that other do it (excepted the ubuntu touch).
Shell workaround is for me a must have, the minimum for a system. that's the last resort...
