I just wanted to post here in case it helps other people - as I searched for this issue and couldn't find anywhere a solution on the net which worked for me.

The situation:

  1. I am in Spain, with a Three UK sim with roaming enabled.
  2. I am using a Jolla phone.
  3. The sim would connect automatically to Yoigo - when Yoigo is available - but completely refuses to connect to any of the other local mobile networks.
  4. I tried going into Settings > Mobile Network > Select Network automatically. Although this will scan for and display available operators (normally Movistar, Orange and Vodafone) - they are all greyed out and I can't select any of them.

After struggling with this for three days and trying all sorts of suggestions I found on the net, what eventually worked for me was inserting the sim in a Nokia Asha 302 phone I also have with me - and forcing the operator selection there. Once it's connected to Movistar once - lo and behold - when I've put the sim back in Jolla - it connected automatically to Movistar!

I don't understand exactly what the above means - I don't know if the Nokia phone changed some settings on the sim - or if the network somehow unblocked access and allowed the sim to connect after the first successful connection. But as I've seen other people struggling with similar issues on the net - you might want to try something like this. I love the old trusty Nokia's - nothing stops them! Sorry - I realise this is a Jolla forum - and I actually am a fan - but you've got to love a tool that just works and gets you out of trouble :-)
